A Grade Is Defined by How Closely You Are Allowed to Look
Before any tolerance in the installation standard makes sense, it helps to know that the standard defines the word inconspicuous as a viewing distance, and that the distance changes with the grade.
ANSI/AWI 0620-2024 states it plainly: inconspicuous means not readily visible without careful inspection at a distance of 610 millimetres, or 24 inches, at Premium grade; 1,219 millimetres, or 48 inches, at Custom; and 1,829 millimetres, or 72 inches, at Economy. A repair acceptable at Economy grade is one you would find by walking up to it. The same repair is a defect at Premium, because Premium requires it to survive inspection from two feet away.
The gap and flushness tolerances are equally concrete. The standard requires that they be tested with a feeler gauge at the points where components are required to contact, and that they apply to the product as installed rather than as it left the shop. It also anticipates its own ambiguity: should a conflict be discovered within the standard, the least restrictive requirement prevails.
One consequence is worth stating first. If a project references the standard and names no grade, Custom applies by default — and the difference between Custom and Premium at a wood-to-wood field joint is 0.8 millimetres against 0.4, a doubling nobody has to sign anything to receive.
What Has to Be True Before a Cabinet Is Lifted
The tolerances describe the finished result. Everything that makes them achievable happens before the first box goes on the wall, and much of it is not the installer’s decision it appears to be.
The standard begins with the building rather than the cabinetry. The installer is required to confirm the presence of wood blocking or metal strapping as indicated in the contract documents, and if it is not there, to seek written directives rather than improvise. Every requirement is also stated as contingent on maintaining proper interior environmental controls before, during and after installation, with material confirmed as properly conditioned to the jobsite. Cabinetry delivered into an unconditioned building is outside the standard before anyone reaches for a level.
Fastening is specified rather than left to habit. Drywall and bugle head screws are not permitted. Exposed fasteners at exposed exterior surfaces are not permitted at all, except at access panels, and where fasteners pass through exposed interior surfaces, cover caps of compatible colour are required at both Premium and Custom grade. On standing and running trim the standard even limits the tooling: staples with a crown exceeding 4.8 millimetres are not permitted. And when factory-finished product is cut on site to make it fit, the resulting unfinished core has to be sealed before installation.
Then the level datum. Product must be installed plumb and level within 3.2 millimetres, an eighth of an inch, in 2,438 millimetres, or 96 inches. That is the output specification. The input is a room, and the standard is explicit that it is not the responsibility of the installer to scribe or fit to walls, ceilings, floors or openings whose plumb, level, flat, straight or square values exceed the tolerances specified in the contract documents. Establishing a datum is the act of finding out, before anything is fixed, how much of the discrepancy between those two facts has to be absorbed and where.
Scribing Is a Planned Dimension, and the Standard Rations It
Scribe material is the currency a run of cabinetry uses to buy its way out of an out-of-true wall, and the higher the grade the less of it you are allowed to spend.
Most people meet scribing as a remedy. The standard treats it as an allowance with a budget. At Premium grade the maximum installed width of a scribe filler is 50.8 millimetres, two inches, and scribe moulding is not permitted at all — the fit has to be cut into the cabinetry itself. At Custom grade either fillers or moulding are permitted at a maximum installed width of 76.2 millimetres, three inches, with moulding ends butt joined at flat surfaces, mitred or coped at corners, and open ends bevelled. At both grades exposed ends must be banded and colour-compatible caulk is permitted only up to 3.2 millimetres.
The geometry of a scribe is specified too. Scribes may be set flush with the abutting surface or set back a maximum of 3.2 millimetres, subject to a variance of plus or minus 0.8 millimetres, and the scribe joinery has to be consistent across elevations — one detail repeated, not a decision made afresh at each wall. Fillers at inside corners where two elevations meet must be equal in width and no wider than 76.2 millimetres unless hardware clearance demands it, which is why a well-planned corner has matching fillers left and right rather than one wide one.
A Premium-grade run needing four inches of scribe somewhere along a wall cannot have it, so those four inches have to appear as filler width in the elevation, or as a deliberately shortened run, before anyone builds a box.
What Is Achievable, and What Is Marketing
The most useful thing about a written tolerance is that it is a band rather than a point. Reading the bands closely tells you both what to expect and where the standard quietly stops caring.
Take the reveals. In all four construction families the standard covers, the critical reveal is the same 3.2 millimetres, an eighth of an inch — a nominal in one case and a maximum in the others. What changes is the variance permitted around it: plus or minus .031 inch at Premium, .063 at Custom, .094 at Economy. An Economy elevation can therefore run reveals between roughly one thirty-second and seven thirty-seconds of an inch and still comply. Uniform reveals are not a property a kitchen either has or lacks; they are a band, and the grade names the band.
The standard is also candid about surfaces it does not treat equally. Wood-to-wood flushness at a flat field joint is held to 0.4 millimetres at Premium, but the same joint at a shaped surface is allowed 0.8, because a profile is harder to align and less legible to the eye. Wood-to-non-wood gaps are allowed 0.8 millimetres at Premium against 0.4 for wood to wood. And the clearest example sits behind a wall cabinet: the permissible gap between wall and cabinet at the back bottom edge is less than 6.4 millimetres, a full quarter inch, at both Premium and Custom, and less than 12.7 at Economy. That is more than fifteen times the Premium tolerance on the face joints two feet away. The standard is not being inconsistent; it is allocating precision to where it is visible.
Two further figures are worth carrying into a drawing. In expansion joints the minimum reveal gap between panels is calculated as the length of the panel multiplied by 0.004, for all cores — a movement allowance stated as arithmetic rather than as a rule of thumb. And joints designed to be caulked are to be approximately 3.2 millimetres wide, because a narrower joint cannot be filled properly.
