Sunnyside Kitchen Cabinetry for the West Shore’s Lakefront and Canyons
Sunnyside is where old west-shore cabins and rebuilt mountain-modern homes sit side by side, all of them sealed and heated through a long winter. PineWood Cabinets designs and builds cabinetry for both in our Rocklin workshop, then delivers and installs it on the west shore with our own crews.

Designing for Sunnyside Homes
PineWood Cabinets builds custom kitchen cabinetry for Sunnyside homes on Lake Tahoe’s west shore, from the lakefront along Highway 89 to the Ward Canyon and Pineland neighborhoods behind it. Every piece is designed, built, and finished in our Rocklin workshop in Placer County, and our crews reach the west shore by Interstate 80 and Highway 89 for measuring, delivery, and installation.
Sunnyside is the stretch of west shore a couple of miles south of Tahoe City, where Ward Creek comes down out of its canyon and meets the lake. Highway 89 runs along the water through it on the way to Homewood and Tahoma, and the marina and the lakeside lodge at the creek mouth are the landmarks most people know it by. Behind the highway the land rises quickly: Pineland and Tahoe Park lie between Sunnyside and Tahoe City, Ward Canyon follows the creek back into the forest toward the Sierra crest, Timberland sits in the trees between the canyon and the shore, and Talmont climbs the slope above all of it. South along the highway, Hurricane Bay carries the lakefront on toward Homewood.
The housing here is a mix more than almost anywhere on the lake. The west shore was settled early, and Tahoe Park, Pineland, and the lakefront still hold cabins from the first half of the last century and the decades after it: small footprints, low ceilings, knotty paneling, stone fireplaces, and kitchens built as galleys with the cabinetry of their day. Next to them, and increasingly on the lakefront and up Ward Canyon, are homes rebuilt in the mountain-modern vocabulary of steel, glass, stone, and big timber, with great rooms turned to the water or the forest. The old cabins and the new houses ask for very different cabinetry, and we draw each on its own terms.
Many of these are second homes, and more than on some parts of the lake, a good number are full-time. Either way the house is heated hard through a west-shore winter, which is snowier than the north and east shores, and the second homes then sit unheated for weeks while the spring thaw makes the air wet again. Owners of those houses are here for August and the holidays and a handful of weekends, and the cabinetry has to be measured, delivered, and installed inside those visits. We build for the moisture swing and schedule for the calendar, which is the subject of the next section.
On permits, Sunnyside and the neighborhoods behind it are unincorporated Placer County, so building permits come from the county, and the whole west shore sits inside the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency boundary, so TRPA reviews work that falls under its rules. The same two layers apply in Tahoe City, Homewood, and Tahoma. A kitchen that stays inside the existing walls is a far simpler conversation than one that adds to a lakefront footprint, and we tell you which one you have before the design goes far.

Cabinetry Built for Old Cabins, New Houses, and a Snowy Winter
Wood moves with the moisture in the air around it, and the air inside a heated lake house in January is about as dry as indoor air gets. The house then swings the other way during a wet spring or an unheated shoulder season, and on the west shore the spring is wetter and the snow lies longer than across the lake. Cabinetry that ignores this shows it within a few years: wide doors cup, panels split, and finishes craze along the joints. Everything we build for Sunnyside assumes that movement is coming, and in an old cabin that has settled on its own we also scribe and fit to walls and floors that are rarely square.
In practice that means frame-and-panel doors whose panels float in their grooves rather than being glued tight; veneer-core plywood for wide surfaces, which is far more stable than solid lumber; quartersawn or rift-sawn boards for long solid parts, because that cut moves less across its width; and finish systems that stay flexible instead of turning brittle. Species follow the house. Fir and knotty alder with simple doors, or a painted finish, suit the cabins of Tahoe Park and Pineland. Rift-sawn white oak and walnut suit the rebuilt mountain-modern homes on the lakefront and up Ward Canyon. Reclaimed Douglas fir suits an owner who wants a new house to carry the old shore’s vocabulary.
The west shore faces east, so lake-facing kitchens take the morning sun across the water rather than the long afternoon glare the east shore gets. For those rooms we still choose finish sheen and pigment with reflected light in mind, and we talk through where the cabinetry sits relative to the glass before a species is chosen.
How We Work in Sunnyside

Process, Timeline, and What a Sunnyside Kitchen Costs
We start with a site visit timed to when you are at the lake. We measure the room, note the path in from the highway or the canyon road, and talk about how the house is used: whether it is lived in all year or opened for August and the holidays, how many people it sleeps, whether the kitchen feeds a crowd back from the beach or two people on a quiet weekend in October. Design follows with drawings and samples, and once approved the cabinetry goes into production in Rocklin.
Because every piece is built for your room, a custom kitchen is a multi-month process from first drawing to final install, and at the lake we add the delivery window to that calendar early. Projects start at $25,000. A full lakefront kitchen with an island, appliance integration, and a pantry or bar wall lands above that, and a remodel that moves plumbing or opens a wall adds the cost of that work. We put real numbers to your scope after the measure.

Why a West-Shore Kitchen Should Be Built for Its House
A kitchen in Sunnyside works in bursts if the house is a second home and all year if it is not, and either way it works in a house that was built for this shore. It feeds a dozen people breakfast before the beach, holds a week of groceries carried down from Tahoe City or up from Truckee, dries wet gear by the fire, and in winter it does all of that with four feet of snow on the deck. Stock cabinetry built for a suburban rhythm and a temperate climate was never designed for the humidity swing, the crowd, or a 1940s cabin with a seven-foot ceiling.
Custom work answers each house on its own terms. In an old Tahoe Park or Pineland cabin that means a galley that stores more than its footprint suggests, doors sized to the low ceiling, and a finish that lifts a dark room without erasing what people love about it. In a rebuilt lakefront home it means cabinetry held low under the glass, a long island turned to the morning light, and a species chosen to sit beside stone and steel. Up Ward Canyon it means cabinetry scaled to a tall room that looks at trees rather than water, with a pantry that can swallow a holiday’s worth of food. The same shop builds the mudroom bench, the ski storage, and the bunk-room built-ins to the same standard.
Sunnyside sits in the middle of the west shore we serve. Tahoe City is just north past Tahoe Park, and Homewood and Tahoma lie south along Highway 89 past Hurricane Bay. The whole basin is on our Lake Tahoe page.
Sunnyside Kitchen & Cabinetry FAQs
Questions Sunnyside, Ward Canyon, and Tahoe Park owners ask before planning cabinetry for a west-shore home.
Do you install cabinetry in Sunnyside, or only supply it?
We do both. Sunnyside is in Placer County, California, so our California contractor licence covers the work, and the same crews that build the cabinetry in Rocklin deliver and install it on the west shore. That matters because the installers know how the boxes were built and where the clearances are, and because we schedule the install around your visits rather than handing the calendar to someone else.
Which permits apply to a kitchen project in Sunnyside?
Sunnyside and the neighborhoods behind it are unincorporated Placer County, so building permits come from the county, and because the whole west shore lies inside the Tahoe basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency reviews work that falls under its rules. A cabinetry replacement in an existing kitchen is a simpler conversation than a lakefront addition. We handle the permit and coordination work on our side as part of the project.
Can you work with both an old west-shore cabin and a new mountain-modern house?
Yes, and the two ask for different things. In an older cabin in Tahoe Park or Pineland we scribe to walls that are no longer square, size doors to a low ceiling, and choose fir, alder, or a painted finish that suits the room. In a rebuilt mountain-modern home on the lakefront or up Ward Canyon we hold the cabinetry low under the glass, scale it to a tall room, and lean toward rift-sawn white oak or walnut beside stone and steel.
How do dry, heated interiors at the lake affect the cabinetry?
At about 6,225 feet the air is already dry, and a furnace running through a Tahoe winter pushes indoor humidity very low. Then a second home sits unheated for weeks and swings the other way in a wet spring. We build for that cycle with floating door panels, veneer-core plywood on wide surfaces, quartersawn and rift-sawn stock for long solid parts, and finishes chosen to flex rather than craze. The west shore faces the morning sun across the lake, so east-facing kitchens get finishes chosen with that light in mind.
When can cabinetry be delivered and installed on the west shore?
We plan around the season. Snow on Interstate 80 and Highway 89, chain controls, and summer traffic through Tahoe City all affect when a truck can reach Sunnyside, and Ward Canyon and Talmont driveways are a different proposition in February than in July. We sequence production in Rocklin so the cabinetry arrives in a window that works for the road and for when you can be at the house, which for most owners means late spring through fall, though we install through winter when the road allows.
Are you licensed in California, and how long have you been in business?
Yes. PineWood Cabinets is a licensed California contractor (CSLB License #1095293) operating as a division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates, and we have designed, built, and installed custom cabinetry since 2006. Projects start at $25,000.
