Kitchens for Sebastopol and the West County

Sebastopol is the market town of west Sonoma County, with Victorians and Craftsman bungalows on its in-town streets and small-acreage properties on the roads out toward Graton, Occidental, and Freestone. PineWood Cabinets designs, builds, and installs custom cabinetry for both from our workshop in Rocklin.

Cabinetry for the Apple Country Side of Sonoma

PineWood Cabinets builds custom kitchens and cabinetry for homeowners in the City of Sebastopol and the unincorporated west county around it. Every cabinet is designed, built, and finished in our Rocklin, Placer County workshop, and our own crew makes the drive to measure the room, walk the site, and install the work. City or county issues the permit depending on which side of the line the house sits.

Sebastopol grew up as the shipping point for the Gravenstein apple, and the orchards that once covered the hills west of Santa Rosa still frame the town even where vineyards have replaced them. Highway 116 is the Gravenstein Highway here, and The Barlow, the market district on the edge of downtown, stands on the site of a former apple cannery. The historic core around Main Street and the residential streets off it, Florence Avenue among them, hold Victorians, early-1900s farmhouses, and Craftsman bungalows that were built before anyone expected a kitchen to be the center of the house. Beyond the city limits, the roads out toward Graton, Occidental, and Freestone, and north toward Forestville, pass small-acreage properties: ranchettes with a farmhouse or a 1970s-to-2000s custom home, an orchard remnant, and a barn.

The town also has a climate of its own. It sits close enough to the coast and to the Laguna de Santa Rosa that the marine layer rolls in on summer mornings and the winters are long and damp, which is a different problem for cabinetry than the heat of the inland valleys. Each of those facts, the housing, the jurisdiction, and the fog, shapes the kitchens we design here.

Designing for Sebastopol Homes

In town, the Victorians and bungalows set the terms. Kitchens were built as back rooms, narrow and tall, with a pantry closet and a porch beyond, and a century of settling has left floors out of level and walls out of square. We measure every wall rather than trusting a drawing, build cabinetry to those real dimensions, and favor inset doors, honest joinery, and quieter painted or stained finishes so the new work reads as if it has always been in the house. Full-height storage uses the ceiling these homes have, and where original casings, wainscot, or a built-in hutch survive, we detail the cabinetry to meet them cleanly rather than compete.

Many in-town owners want the kitchen opened to the dining room or extended into the old porch, which is a general contractor’s job for the structure and ours for the cabinetry that follows. We draw for the opened room, usually with a work island where the wall stood and a tall run on the inside wall that takes over what the pantry closet held.

Out on the ranchettes the problem changes. The farmhouses and custom homes toward Graton, Occidental, and Freestone are working properties, and the kitchen handles the garden, the orchard, the animals, and the long table at the holidays. We design for that use: deep drawer banks, a pantry scaled to real volume, a mudroom run where the household comes in from outside, and finishes that take wear, all built in the same shop to the same standard as the kitchen so the working side of the house reads as one piece of millwork.

Style follows the house. Painted inset fronts suit the Victorians and bungalows; a warmer painted-and-stained mix, often with a fir or oak island, suits the farmhouses; and flat-panel or simple Shaker in rift-sawn oak suits the newer custom homes in the hills. Sebastopol leans toward natural, lightly finished wood and away from high gloss, which is a sound instinct in a town that lives under fog half the year.

How We Work in Sebastopol

  • In-person measurement of out-of-square rooms in the in-town Victorians and bungalows
  • Inset doors and period detailing where original trim and built-ins survive
  • Pantry, mudroom, and laundry cabinetry for west-county ranchettes, built to match the kitchen
  • Construction and hardware chosen for a damp, fog-influenced climate
  • Every cabinet built and finished to order in our Rocklin, CA workshop
  • City or Permit Sonoma path identified before drawings are finished

Permits, Fog, and Materials in West Sonoma County

The first question is which side of the city line the house sits on. Inside the City of Sebastopol, the city issues building permits. Graton, Occidental, Freestone, Forestville, and the ranchettes along the county roads are unincorporated Sonoma County, so permits there come from Permit Sonoma, the county’s permit and resource management department. A cabinetry replacement within the existing footprint is generally a lighter permit path than a remodel that moves walls, gas, or plumbing, and we identify which category a design falls into before the drawings are finished.

The climate is the other local fact. Sebastopol gets the marine layer on summer mornings and a long, wet winter, so the wood in a kitchen here sees steady humidity rather than the dryness of the Sacramento Valley or the foothills. The risk is swelling and sticking rather than shrinking and cracking. We build frame-and-panel doors so panels can move, choose species like white oak, alder, walnut, and painted maple that behave predictably, apply catalyzed finishes to every face of every part in our Rocklin finishing facility rather than spraying on site, and specify drawer slides and hinges that tolerate a damp house. Our cabinet construction guide explains the reasoning.

A Sebastopol project begins with a conversation and then a site visit. We drive out from Rocklin, measure the room in person, look at how the house is built and how the household cooks, and talk frankly about budget and scope. Design follows, from layout through detailed drawings, with species, door profiles, finish samples, and hardware chosen together. Once approved, the cabinetry is built and finished in our workshop and our own crew returns to install it in a single trip. A custom kitchen is a multi-month process from first drawing to final install. Projects start at $25,000, and we provide a written proposal after we have seen the space. Sebastopol Kitchen & Cabinetry FAQs

Common questions from Sebastopol and west-county homeowners planning a custom kitchen or cabinetry project.

Who issues the permit for a Sebastopol kitchen remodel?

Inside the city limits, the City of Sebastopol issues building permits. Graton, Occidental, Freestone, Forestville, and the ranchettes along the county roads are unincorporated, so permits there come from Permit Sonoma, the county’s permit and resource management department. A cabinetry replacement within the existing footprint is generally a lighter path than a remodel that moves walls, gas, or plumbing, and we identify which category a design falls into before the drawings are finished.

How does the fog affect cabinetry in Sebastopol?

Sebastopol sits close enough to the coast that the marine layer reaches it on summer mornings, and winters are long and damp. That means the wood sees steady humidity rather than the dryness of the inland valleys, and the risk is swelling and sticking rather than shrinking and cracking. We build frame-and-panel doors so panels can move, seal every face of every part in our Rocklin finishing facility, and specify hardware and drawer slides that tolerate a damp house.

Can you work in a Victorian or Craftsman bungalow in town?

Yes. The in-town houses on streets like Florence Avenue and around the historic core have small kitchens, tall ceilings, out-of-square walls, and original trim worth keeping. We measure the actual room, build cabinetry sized to those dimensions, and favor inset doors, honest joinery, and quieter painted or stained finishes so the new work reads as part of the house.

Do you serve the west-county ranchettes outside the city?

Yes. The small-acreage properties toward Graton, Occidental, and Freestone are the other half of Sebastopol for us. Those kitchens tend to be larger, harder-working rooms with a pantry and mudroom attached, and we build all of it in the same shop so the working side of the house reads as one piece of millwork.

How far is Sebastopol from your workshop, and how do installs work?

Our workshop is in Rocklin, in Placer County, and Sebastopol is one of the farther communities we serve in Sonoma County. Our own crew makes the drive to measure, and the finished cabinetry comes out in a single delivery for installation by the same team, so the time on site is concentrated rather than spread across weeks.

Are you licensed, and where do projects start?

PineWood Cabinets is a licensed California contractor (CSLB License #1095293) operating as a division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates, and we have designed, built, and installed custom cabinetry since 2006. Projects start at $25,000, and we provide a written proposal after we have seen the space in person and agreed on the design.
