Custom kitchen and cabinetry in Rubicon Bay on Lake Tahoe's west shore

Lake Tahoe West Shore

Custom Kitchens & Cabinetry in Rubicon Bay

From the granite-and-pine pockets above D.L. Bliss State Park to the gated drives of Rubicon Pointe, we design and build custom kitchens, cabinetry, and remodels for one of Tahoe's quietest stretches of shoreline.

A West Shore Pocket Between Meeks Bay and Emerald Bay

Rubicon Bay sits on Lake Tahoe's west shore in El Dorado County, strung along Highway 89 between Meeks Bay to the north and the dramatic cliffs of Emerald Bay and D.L. Bliss State Park to the south. It is one of the lake's less-traveled stretches, more granite outcrops and Jeffrey pine than commercial strip, where homes step down toward the water on steep, forested lots and the Rubicon Trail traces the shoreline below. Since 2006, PineWood Cabinets has built custom kitchens and cabinetry for homeowners across this corner of Tahoe, working out of our shop in Roseville, CA.

The housing here is genuinely mixed. Older Tahoe cabins from the mid-century summer-home era sit alongside substantial newer lakefront residences, many tucked into the wooded neighborhoods around Rubicon Pointe and the lots that climb the hillside east of the highway. A good number of these are second homes, used hardest in summer and over winter holidays, then left quiet through the shoulder seasons. That seasonal rhythm shapes how a kitchen needs to work: it has to handle a houseful of guests after a day on the water or in the snow, then sit empty for weeks at a stretch without trouble.

Building on the west shore is its own discipline. Access is along the two-lane Highway 89, which narrows and slows in winter, and many driveways are steep, tree-lined, and tight for delivery. Lots fall away toward the lake, so kitchens are often oriented to capture water and ridgeline views through a screen of pines. We plan deliveries, staging, and installation sequencing around those realities, and we detail cabinetry to live comfortably with Tahoe's swing from dry alpine summers to deep, damp winters.

Whether you own a compact cabin within earshot of the Rubicon Trail or a larger home along the Rubicon Bay shoreline, our work covers the full arc of a kitchen project, from first design sketches through finished cabinets, full remodels, and the built-in millwork that ties a mountain house together.

Designing for Granite, Pine, and the Long Quiet Season

A Rubicon Bay kitchen should feel like it belongs to the west shore rather than to anywhere in particular. We lean on materials that hold up to the setting and echo it: stable domestic hardwoods like walnut, cherry, alder, and quartersawn oak, honest finishes that wear gracefully, and details that read as mountain craft rather than catalog gloss. The goal is a room that looks right under flat winter light and under the bright glare off the lake in July.

The seasonal life of these homes drives a lot of our decisions. Cabinetry on the west shore lives through dry summers and cold, humid winters, often with the heat off for weeks at a time, so we specify wood species and joinery that tolerate that movement, seal end grain carefully, and choose hardware that keeps working after a season of disuse. For second homes especially, we plan storage that makes opening and closing the house simple, with room to stow what gets put away between visits.

We also design for how Tahoe homes actually get used: many cooks at once, gear coming in off the lake or the slopes, and meals that run from a quick breakfast before an early start to a long dinner with a full house. That means generous prep surfaces, durable countertops, real pantry capacity, and layouts that keep traffic flowing past the cook rather than through the work zone.

How We Approach Rubicon Bay Homes

  • Stable domestic hardwoods and joinery chosen for Tahoe's seasonal swings in humidity and temperature
  • Layouts oriented to lake and ridgeline views through the surrounding pines
  • Storage planned for second homes that open, fill, and close with the seasons
  • Durable prep surfaces and traffic-friendly layouts for cooking with a full house
  • Delivery and installation sequenced around Highway 89 access and steep, wooded driveways
  • Mudroom and entry millwork sized for ski, paddle, and trail gear

From Cabin Refresh to Full Lakefront Remodel

Our work in Rubicon Bay runs the full range of what a kitchen project can be. For the older cabins around D.L. Bliss and the upper hillside lots, that often means a thoughtful remodel that keeps the original mountain character while quietly modernizing how the kitchen works, adding real storage, better light, and surfaces that stand up to hard seasonal use. For larger homes along the shoreline and near Rubicon Pointe, it can mean designing a kitchen from the studs out, with custom cabinetry built to the room rather than ordered to fit it.

In every case the pieces are the same: a design phase where we measure, study the views and the light, and lay out how you actually cook and host; cabinetry built to your room and your storage needs; full remodels coordinated with the other trades the project requires; and the built-ins, pantries, and entry millwork that make a Tahoe house function. The four services below are the most common starting points for Rubicon Bay homeowners.
