A resort community at about 6,300 feet in Martis Valley, outside the Tahoe basin
Kitchens for Northstar’s Village Condos and Mountain Lots
Northstar homes are sealed and heated hard on ski weekends, then left to sit, and most of them answer to a design-review board or a condo association before any work begins. PineWood Cabinets designs and builds cabinetry for that life in a workshop in Rocklin, below the snow line, and delivers and installs it in the village and on the mountain.

Designing for Northstar Homes
PineWood Cabinets builds custom kitchen cabinetry for ski homes at Northstar, from village condos and ski-in townhomes to custom homes in Big Springs and along Northstar Drive. Every piece is designed, built, and finished in our Rocklin workshop in Placer County, and our crews reach the resort by Interstate 80 and Highway 267 for measuring, delivery, and installation.
Northstar is a resort community rather than a town. It occupies the slopes of Mount Pluto on the east side of Martis Valley, between Truckee and Brockway Summit, with the Northstar California ski area at its center and Northstar Drive climbing from Highway 267 to the village at the base of the lifts. The base sits at about 6,300 feet. Everything here was planned around skiing in winter and golf, biking, and the lake in summer, and almost every home is a second home used in bursts.
The housing comes in two broad kinds. Around the village are the ski-in, ski-out condos and townhomes: compact kitchens, shared walls, elevators and stair carries, and building associations with rules about work hours, loading areas, and noise. Up the mountain and along the lower runs, in Big Springs, the Home Run area, and the custom lots off Northstar Drive, are the larger homes, many of them recent, in the mountain-modern vocabulary of stone, steel, glass, and big timber, with tall great rooms and kitchens meant to feed a houseful after a day on the hill. Both kinds answer to the Northstar Property Owners Association, which runs design review for the community, on top of any building-level rules.
Second-home use shapes a kitchen more than people expect. The house is sealed and heated hard through a holiday week, then left to sit, sometimes with the heat set low, sometimes not at all, while spring runoff makes the air wet again. Deliveries have to land when the owner can be there, when Highway 267 is open without chain controls, and when the building or the association allows it. The cabinetry has to be built to ride those swings out, which is the subject of the next section.
Permitting here is simpler than on the lake. Northstar is unincorporated Placer County, and Martis Valley drains to the Truckee River rather than to Lake Tahoe, which puts the whole community outside the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency boundary. A kitchen project is permitted by Placer County, without the separate TRPA layer that applies in Kings Beach on the other side of the summit. The association’s design review and the building’s rules still apply, and we read both before we draw.

Building Cabinetry for 6,300 Feet and an Empty House
Wood moves with the moisture in the air around it, and the air inside a heated ski home in January is about as dry as indoor air gets. Then the house swings the other way in a wet spring or an unheated shoulder season. A kitchen that ignores this shows it within a few years: panels split, wide doors cup, finishes craze at the joints. Our Northstar cabinetry is built on the assumption that movement is coming.
In practice that means frame-and-panel doors with panels that float in their grooves instead of being glued tight; veneer-core plywood for wide surfaces, which is far more dimensionally stable than solid lumber; quartersawn or rift-sawn boards for long solid parts, because that cut moves less across its width; and finish systems that stay flexible rather than brittle. Species follow the look: white oak and walnut for the mountain-modern homes on the hill, knotty alder and reclaimed fir where the owner wants the lodge vocabulary, painted finishes for village condos that want to feel bright and compact.
Hardware is chosen for the same conditions, with soft-close hinges and full-extension slides that keep their adjustment through a cold-to-hot cycle, and we leave the clearances a drawer front needs when its box has shrunk a fraction in February and swelled again in May. We have written more about this in our guide to mountain-home kitchen design and in the cabinet construction guide.
How We Work at Northstar

Process, Timeline, and What a Northstar Kitchen Costs
We start with a site visit timed to when you are at the house. We measure the room, note the path in from the road or the elevator, read the association and building rules, and talk about how the house is used: how many people it sleeps on a holiday week, whether the kitchen feeds a crowd after last chair or two people on a quiet weekend in September. Design follows with drawings and samples, prepared with design review in mind where it applies, and once approved the cabinetry goes into production in Rocklin.
Because every piece is built for your room, a custom kitchen is a multi-month process from first drawing to final install, and in the mountains we add the delivery window to that calendar early. Projects start at $25,000. A full ski-home kitchen with an island, appliance integration, and a bar or pantry wall lands above that, and a remodel that moves plumbing or opens a wall adds the cost of that work. We put real numbers to your scope after the measure.

Why a Northstar Kitchen Should Be Built for the Mountain
A kitchen in a ski house works harder in a shorter time than almost any other kitchen. It feeds a dozen people breakfast before the lifts open, holds a week of groceries hauled up from Truckee, dries gloves on the radiator, and then goes dark for a month. Stock cabinetry built for a suburban rhythm and a temperate climate is the wrong tool. It was never designed for the humidity swing, the crowd, or the long empty stretches.
Custom work answers each house on its own terms. In a village condo that means a compact kitchen that stores more than its footprint suggests, with a bar wall facing the living room and finishes that stay bright in a unit that faces the trees. In a Big Springs custom home it means cabinetry scaled to a tall timber room, a pantry that can swallow a holiday’s worth of food, and a species and finish chosen to sit beside stone and steel. The same shop builds the mudroom bench, the ski and boot storage, the bunk-room built-ins, and the vanities to the same standard, and details them so the design-review drawings tell one story.
Northstar sits between our mountain hubs. We serve Truckee at the foot of the valley, Olympic Valley across the highway, the north shore over Brockway Summit, and the whole lake from our Lake Tahoe page.
Northstar Kitchen & Cabinetry FAQs
Questions Northstar owners ask before planning cabinetry for a ski home.
Which parts of Northstar do you work in?
All of them: the ski-in, ski-out condos and townhomes around the village, the custom lots and larger homes in Big Springs and the Home Run area, and the homes along Northstar Drive. The whole community sits in Martis Valley in unincorporated Placer County, and our crews reach it from the Rocklin workshop by Interstate 80 and Highway 267.
Does TRPA apply to a kitchen remodel at Northstar?
No. Northstar is in Martis Valley, north of Brockway Summit and outside the Tahoe basin, so it is outside the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency boundary. A kitchen project here is permitted by Placer County alone rather than by TRPA and the county together. The Northstar Property Owners Association runs its own design review, and condo and townhome buildings add their own rules about when and how work happens.
How does the altitude and a heated winter affect cabinetry?
Strongly. At a base elevation of roughly 6,300 feet the outside air is already dry, and a heating system running through a long winter drives indoor humidity very low; then the house swings the other way in a wet spring or sits unheated between visits. We build for that movement with floating panels, veneer-core plywood on wide surfaces, quartersawn and rift-sawn stock for long solid parts, and finish systems that flex with the wood rather than crack.
Can you deliver and install in winter?
We plan around the season rather than against it. Chain controls on Highway 267, snow on the road up to the village, resort traffic on a holiday weekend, and the loading rules of a condo building all decide when a truck can arrive and where it can stage. We sequence production in Rocklin so cabinetry lands in a window that works for your building, the road, and your own calendar at the house.
Are you licensed in California?
Yes. PineWood Cabinets is a licensed California contractor (CSLB License #1095293) operating as a division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates, and we have designed, built, and installed custom cabinetry since 2006.
What does a custom kitchen at Northstar cost, and how long does it take?
Projects start at $25,000, and a full ski-home kitchen with an island, appliance integration, and a bar or pantry wall lands above that, as does a whole-house program with a mudroom, bunk-room built-ins, and vanities. A custom kitchen is a multi-month process because the cabinetry is built for your room in Rocklin, then delivered and installed, and for a second home we fit the schedule to when you can be there or to when you would rather not be.
