A master-planned community of the 1980s–90s between the river parkway and Highway 50
Kitchen Cabinetry for Gold River’s Villages, Built in Rocklin
Gold River was planned as a whole, village by village, and most of its kitchens date from the same two decades. PineWood Cabinets designs, builds, and installs cabinetry made to measure for Gold River homes from our workshop in Rocklin, and has since 2006.

Designing for Gold River Homes
PineWood Cabinets builds custom kitchen cabinetry for Gold River homeowners who are ready to replace a 1980s or 1990s kitchen with one designed for the room. Everything is designed, built, and finished in our Rocklin workshop in Placer County, and our crews reach Gold River by way of Highway 50 and Sunrise Boulevard for measuring, delivery, and installation.
Gold River is unusual in the Sacramento area for having been planned all at once. It is an unincorporated master-planned community laid out in the 1980s and built out through the 1990s, organized into named villages under a single community association with architectural review, and set on the strip of land between the American River Parkway and Highway 50. It carries a Rancho Cordova mailing address but is not part of the city. The result is a community of consistent streetscapes, mature landscaping, and homes that share a generation: two-story production plans and single-story village homes with the kitchens the builders of that era specified, which means oak or laminate boxes, a short run of uppers, a nook with a bay window, and a pantry that is usually a closet.
The villages differ more in setting than in age. Homes along the parkway side back onto the river trails and the trees, and often have a slider or a window wall facing that way. The villages off Gold Country Boulevard and around the Town Center are the community’s core, with the widest range of plans. Along Sunrise Boulevard and Coloma Road the villages sit closer to the main roads and to Highway 50, which is also the quickest run up to our workshop.
Because Gold River is unincorporated, building permits come from Sacramento County rather than from the City of Rancho Cordova, whatever the mailing address says. The community association’s architectural review exists to govern the exterior and the streetscape, so interior cabinetry is normally outside its concern; if a project touches a window or anything else visible from the street, we flag it early. On the county side, a like-for-like cabinetry replacement is a lighter lift on paper than a remodel that moves plumbing, gas, or electrical, or removes a wall. We tell you which category your project falls into before the design is final.
Then there is the climate. Gold River gets the full Sacramento Valley summer, with afternoons that reach 100°F and strong west sun, and the Delta breeze that works its way up the river most evenings and takes the edge off. The mature trees help, but a kitchen slider or a nook bay facing west takes a heavy UV load for hours a day through the long summer. That swing from dry heat to damp winter is the biggest physical fact we design around in Gold River, and it drives the choices in the next section.

Materials and Finishes for a Village Home in the Valley
Dry summer heat and damp winters pull wood in opposite directions over a year, so we build Gold River cabinetry to tolerate movement rather than fight it. Doors are frame-and-panel with panels that float in their grooves, wide surfaces use veneer-core plywood rather than solid slabs, and we choose stable, straight-grained cuts for anything long and unsupported. These are quiet decisions that show up years later as doors that still close square.
Most Gold River homeowners are replacing the honey oak of the original kitchen, and most of them want to move toward a lighter, cleaner look that suits the two-story plans and the open family rooms of the era. Painted cabinetry in a transitional style is the usual answer, with a stained wood island for warmth, and it handles the west sun well when the coating system is chosen for it. Where a homeowner wants wood throughout, we flag the faces that sit in the afternoon beam from a slider or a bay and steer toward species and finishes that age evenly there.
Hardware is specified for the long haul: full-extension drawer slides, soft-close hinges, and pulls that stay tight through a kitchen that shares a wall with a hot garage. In a 1990s production kitchen the drawers are usually what gave out first; in ours, they are the part that convinces people.
How We Work in Gold River
- On-site measurement of the real room, not the builder’s plan from the 1990s
- Layouts that remove the filler strips, dead corners, and peninsula the original plan left behind
- Species and finishes chosen for valley heat and west-facing sliders and bays
- Pantry and drawer storage planned around how the household actually cooks
- Clear guidance on what your scope will require from Sacramento County, and when the community association is involved
- Design, build, and installation by one Rocklin-based team

Process, Timeline, and What a Gold River Kitchen Costs
Every Gold River project begins with a visit to the house. We measure the room as it is, note where the slider or the bay throws its light, where the garage door lands the groceries, and where the existing cabinetry wastes space, and we talk frankly about budget. Design follows, with drawings and samples you can hold, and once the design is approved the cabinetry goes into production in Rocklin.
Because the cabinetry is built for your room rather than pulled from a warehouse, a custom kitchen is a multi-month process from first drawing to final install. Projects start at $25,000. A full kitchen with an island, a pantry wall, and appliance integration lands above that, and a remodel that moves walls or utilities adds the cost of that work as well. We put real numbers to your specific scope after the measure, not before.

Why a 1990s Gold River Kitchen Is Worth Rebuilding
The production kitchens of the 1980s and 1990s had a recognizable set of habits: a peninsula with a raised bar that cuts the kitchen off from the family room, a nook with a bay window that holds a table nobody uses, uppers that stop a foot short of the ceiling with a dusty soffit above them, and base cabinets that are all doors. In Gold River those kitchens have had a few decades of use, and many have been through one refresh already, usually new fronts and a new counter over the same plan.
Custom cabinetry answers the actual house. The peninsula comes out and a proper island goes in, sized to the room rather than to a module. The nook becomes a pantry wall or a coffee station, or stays a nook with a built-in bench and storage under it. The uppers run to the ceiling once the soffit is gone, or stop deliberately with a lit display row, and the bases become deep drawers that hold pots the way people stack them. The style can be anything from painted Shaker to flat slab in a warm veneer, and in Gold River it usually lands in the transitional middle, clean enough for a two-story family room and warm enough to live with.
Beyond the kitchen we build the same way for mudroom drop zones off the garage, home-office walls, media built-ins, and laundry rooms, all from the same workshop to the same standard. Gold River sits at the center of our Highway 50 work; we also serve Rancho Cordova around it, Fair Oaks and Carmichael across the river, and Folsom up the corridor.
Gold River Kitchen & Cabinetry FAQs
Questions Gold River homeowners ask before replacing an original kitchen or planning a remodel in the villages.
Does Gold River’s community association need to approve a kitchen remodel?
Gold River is a master-planned community organized into named villages under a community association with architectural review. Interior cabinetry is normally not what that review is concerned with; it exists to govern the exterior and the streetscape. If your project touches anything visible from outside, such as a window change, we will say so up front. For the cabinetry itself, the review that matters is yours.
Who issues building permits for a kitchen in Gold River?
Gold River is unincorporated, so building permits come from Sacramento County rather than from a city, even though the mailing address says Rancho Cordova. A like-for-like cabinetry replacement usually involves less paperwork than a remodel that moves plumbing, gas, or electrical, or removes a wall, and we tell you which your scope will trigger before the design is final.
My Gold River kitchen is original to the house. Is it worth replacing rather than refreshing?
Most Gold River homes were built in the 1980s and 1990s, and a kitchen of that age has usually reached the end of its drawer slides, its finish, and its layout at the same time. A refresh changes the fronts and leaves the plan alone. Custom cabinetry built to the real room fixes the plan: deep drawers, uppers to the ceiling, a working pantry, and an island that suits how the household actually cooks.
How does the climate in Gold River affect cabinetry?
Gold River gets the full Sacramento Valley summer, with afternoons that reach 100°F and strong west sun, softened in the evening by the Delta breeze off the river. Many village floor plans put a slider or a bay window off the kitchen or the nook, and those faces take a heavy UV load. We build with floating panels and veneer-core plywood for the seasonal swing, and we choose finishes that age evenly on the exposed runs.
Are you licensed in California?
Yes. PineWood Cabinets is a licensed California contractor (CSLB License #1095293) operating as a division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates. We have designed, built, and installed custom cabinetry across the Sacramento region since 2006.
What does a custom kitchen in Gold River cost, and how long does it take?
Projects start at $25,000, and a full kitchen with an island, a pantry, and appliance integration lands above that. Because the cabinetry is built specifically for your room, a custom kitchen is a multi-month process from first drawing to final install. We give you a realistic schedule and a real number once we have measured and agreed on the design.
