This page is for El Dorado County homeowners planning a custom kitchen or built-in cabinetry, from El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park to Placerville and South Lake Tahoe. Every cabinet is designed and built in our Rocklin workshop in Placer County. Crews reach the county by Highway 50 from Sacramento or Highway 49 from Auburn.

Homes Across El Dorado County, and What Each Asks of a Kitchen

Highway 50 is the spine of El Dorado County, and the housing changes with the elevation. At the Sacramento County line the county begins with the newest and largest homes it has; by Placerville it is a gold-rush town; by Pollock Pines it is forest; and over Echo Summit it is the Tahoe Basin. A cabinet shop that serves the whole county has to be comfortable with all four.

El Dorado Hills and its villages

El Dorado Hills is unincorporated but built like a city, a master-planned community of named villages stepping up the hills north and south of Highway 50. Serrano is the most prominent: a gated community with a golf course and a strict design review process. Blackstone, Promontory, and the Bass Lake area are large production and semi-custom developments, most of them built from the 2000s into the 2020s, with open plans, tall ceilings, and generous kitchens that were nonetheless fitted with cabinetry chosen by the builder rather than the owner.

For cabinetry, this is the county's most consistent market. The rooms are big and the layouts are usually sound, so the most common project is replacing stock builder cabinetry with cabinetry made to measure, often while keeping plumbing and electrical where they are. In the estate homes of Serrano and the larger custom lots, the brief expands into a full millwork program: a kitchen with integrated appliances and a scullery, a butler's pantry, a bar, and built-ins that carry the same detailing through the house. Our El Dorado Hills page covers the villages in detail.

Cameron Park, Shingle Springs, and Rescue

East of El Dorado Hills the lots get bigger and the oaks get thicker. Cameron Park is an unincorporated community of homes from the 1960s through the 2000s on hilly oak-woodland parcels, with Cameron Park Country Club at its center and, uniquely, a residential airpark whose homes sit on taxiway streets with hangars beside the garages. Shingle Springs and Rescue continue the pattern with ranch properties, custom homes on acreage, and a scattering of older farmhouses.

These homes were mostly built one or a few at a time rather than by a single production builder, so each kitchen is its own problem. A 1970s Cameron Park ranch typically has a galley or U-shaped kitchen closed off from the family room, a soffit over the uppers, and cabinetry that has been painted twice. Opening the room to the living area and the deck, which usually faces the view, is the standard move, and the cabinetry is drawn for that opened room rather than the original one. Our new Cameron Park page goes into the specifics.

Placerville, Apple Hill, and Pollock Pines

Placerville is the county seat and the gold-rush town the county was built around; its Main Street is a historic district of nineteenth-century commercial buildings, and the town still carries its old nickname, Hangtown. The residential streets around it hold Victorian cottages, Craftsman bungalows, and mid-century ranches, and the Apple Hill and Camino area to the east adds farmhouses and ranch properties among the orchards and vineyards. Pollock Pines, higher still, is forest cabins and full-time mountain homes.

Kitchens in the older stock were service rooms, often a sequence of small spaces at the back of the house, so remodels tend to recover space from a pantry, porch, or back bedroom. Walls are rarely plumb and floors rarely level, so cabinetry is scribed to the house rather than set against it, and homeowners usually want the result to read as if it belonged: inset or frame-and-panel doors, painted or stained finishes, and hardware that does not fight the rest of the house.

South Lake Tahoe and the West Shore

The eastern end of the county is the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. The City of South Lake Tahoe is the county's only incorporated city on the lake, with housing that runs from the canal-front homes of the Tahoe Keys to post-war cabins and newer mountain-modern builds, and the West Shore communities of Emerald Bay, Rubicon Bay, and Meeks Bay hold lakefront cabins and homes on steep, forested lots. Many are second homes that sit unheated for weeks at a time.

Cabinetry here is built for altitude: stable panel construction, frame-and-panel doors that let solid wood move through the seasonal humidity swing, and finishes that tolerate a house that is cold one week and heated the next. Our pages for South Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay, Rubicon Bay, and Meeks Bay cover the lake in detail.

Who Issues the Permit in El Dorado County

Most of El Dorado County is unincorporated, including its two largest communities. El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park are not cities, and their building permits, like those for Shingle Springs, Rescue, Camino, Pollock Pines, and every rural parcel, are issued by El Dorado County. The county has only two incorporated cities: the City of Placerville and the City of South Lake Tahoe, each of which issues its own permits.

The Tahoe Basin adds a layer. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, TRPA, has land-use authority across the basin in both California and Nevada, so a project in South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, or the West Shore communities may involve TRPA as well as the city or county. Inside El Dorado Hills, gated and design-reviewed villages such as Serrano add private review on top of the county permit, and homes in Placerville's historic district may need city review for exterior changes.

Whether a kitchen project needs a permit at all depends on scope: a cabinetry-only replacement that leaves plumbing, gas, and electrical in place is a different conversation from one that moves a sink or opens a wall. We identify the jurisdiction at the first site visit and design with the permit path in mind.

Jurisdictions at a Glance

  • El Dorado County — all unincorporated areas, including El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs, Rescue, Camino, Pollock Pines, Meyers, and the West Shore
  • City of Placerville — incorporated; county seat; Main Street historic district
  • City of South Lake Tahoe — incorporated; issues its own permits
  • TRPA — regional overlay across the entire Tahoe Basin, in addition to the city or county
  • Private design review — Serrano and other El Dorado Hills villages each have their own association process in addition to the public permit

Three Climates Along One Highway

El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park share the Sacramento Valley's climate at its foothill edge: long, hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with strong afternoon sun on the west-facing rooms that so many of these hillside homes were oriented toward. The cabinetry concern is heat and ultraviolet light, so we choose finishes that resist yellowing and fading and keep solid-wood panels free to move within their frames.

Placerville, Apple Hill, and Pollock Pines are higher and cooler, with real winters and occasional snow, but the swing is moderate. The Tahoe Basin is the outlier. Above 6,200 feet, winters are cold and dry, summers are bright and dry, and indoor humidity swings widely between a heated house and one that has been shut up for a month. Wood moves with that swing, so for the South Shore we favor stable engineered panels where a flat surface matters, frame-and-panel construction that gives solid wood room to expand and contract, and finishes that tolerate the cycle. Our cabinet construction guide explains the choices in detail.

Species follow the architecture more than the climate: painted maple and rift-sawn white oak for the transitional interiors of El Dorado Hills; stained alder, cherry, or oak for the farmhouses and bungalows around Placerville; walnut and white oak for the timber-and-stone vocabulary of the lake. The materials we build with are the same across the county; the specification is what changes.

Everything We Build for El Dorado County Homes

A kitchen in El Dorado County rarely stands alone. In a Serrano estate it is one chapter of a millwork program that runs through the scullery, bar, and office; in a Cameron Park ranch it opens onto the family room and the deck; in a Tahoe Keys home it has to hold a week of groceries for a house full of guests. Because we design, build, and install under one roof in Rocklin, the same team can carry the detailing through every one of those rooms.

PineWood Cabinets provides these services for El Dorado County homes.

Cities and Communities We Serve in El Dorado County

Each page below is written for that place: its housing stock, its permit office, and the way its homeowners actually use a kitchen.

We also work in Placerville, Shingle Springs, Rescue, Camino and Apple Hill, Pollock Pines, and Meyers. If your community is not listed, the county page you are reading is the right starting point.

How an El Dorado County Project Runs From Rocklin

Every project starts with a site visit: down Highway 50 from Sacramento or across from Auburn on Highway 49 for the foothill communities, over Echo Summit for the South Shore. We measure the actual room, photograph existing conditions, and talk through how the household uses the kitchen. Design and selections follow, with the permit jurisdiction and any association or TRPA review folded in before drawings are finalized.

The cabinetry is then built and finished in Rocklin and installed by our own team. For the lake, delivery is scheduled with snow season in mind, since chain controls on Highway 50 can move a date by days, and for new construction in the design-reviewed villages we coordinate with the general contractor so the cabinetry arrives when the site is ready. A custom kitchen is a multi-month process from first drawing to final install; we give a realistic timeline after measuring and agreeing on the design.

El Dorado County Kitchen & Cabinetry FAQs

Questions we hear from homeowners in El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Placerville, and South Lake Tahoe.

Which parts of El Dorado County does PineWood Cabinets serve?

All of it. Along the Highway 50 corridor that means El Dorado Hills and its villages, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs, Rescue, Placerville, Camino and Apple Hill, and Pollock Pines. On the South Shore it means South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, and the West Shore communities of Emerald Bay, Rubicon Bay, and Meeks Bay. Our shop is in Rocklin, and crews reach the county by Highway 50 from Sacramento or by Highway 49 from Auburn.

Who issues the building permit for a kitchen remodel in El Dorado County?

El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park are both unincorporated, so their permits, like those for Shingle Springs, Rescue, Pollock Pines, and the rural parcels, come from El Dorado County. The City of Placerville and the City of South Lake Tahoe are incorporated and issue their own. South Lake Tahoe and the rest of the Tahoe Basin also fall under the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. We confirm the jurisdiction before the design is finalized.

Does Serrano’s design review apply to a kitchen remodel?

Serrano is a gated El Dorado Hills community with a strict design review process, and other villages such as Blackstone and Promontory have their own associations. Interior cabinetry is usually not what triggers review; exterior changes such as windows, venting, or an addition are more likely to. We ask homeowners to check their association’s current guidelines early and document anything that needs a submittal.

How is a South Lake Tahoe kitchen different from one in El Dorado Hills?

Mainly climate and occupancy. South Lake Tahoe sits above 6,200 feet with cold, dry winters and a wide seasonal humidity swing, and many homes there are second homes that sit unheated for weeks, so we favor stable panel construction and frame-and-panel doors that let the wood move. El Dorado Hills is lower and hotter, so the concern is summer heat and sun on west-facing rooms rather than deep cold.

Are you licensed to work in El Dorado County?

Yes. PineWood Cabinets is a licensed California contractor (CSLB License #1095293) operating as a division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates. A California contractor’s licence is valid statewide, so the same licence covers a Cameron Park remodel and a Tahoe Keys new build.

Can you replace the builder cabinetry in a 2000s El Dorado Hills home without a full remodel?

Yes, and it is one of the most common projects we do in the county. Many of the production homes in Blackstone, Promontory, and the Bass Lake area have sound layouts and generous rooms but stock cabinetry chosen by the builder. Replacing it with cabinetry made to measure, often while keeping plumbing and electrical where they are, changes the room without the cost or disruption of a layout change.

Do you design for older homes in Placerville and Apple Hill?

Yes. Placerville’s Main Street historic district is ringed by Victorian cottages, Craftsman bungalows, and mid-century ranches, and the Apple Hill and Camino area adds farmhouses and ranch properties on acreage. These kitchens often need space recovered from a sequence of small rooms, cabinetry scribed to walls that are not plumb, and door profiles and finishes that suit the age of the house.

How does winter affect a Tahoe project in El Dorado County?

Snow season affects delivery and installation windows more than design or fabrication. The cabinetry is built in Rocklin regardless of conditions on Echo Summit, but we schedule delivery and installation around Highway 50 chain controls and the homeowner’s access to the house, and for second homes we plan around when the house will be heated.
