Kitchens Built to Fit Elk Grove Homes, from Laguna to Sheldon
Most Elk Grove kitchens were chosen from a builder’s option list years before the current family moved in. PineWood Cabinets designs, builds, and installs cabinetry made to measure for Elk Grove homes from our workshop in Rocklin, and has since 2006.

Designing for Elk Grove Homes
PineWood Cabinets builds custom kitchen cabinetry for Elk Grove homeowners who are done living with the builder’s original boxes. Everything is designed, built, and finished in our Rocklin workshop in Placer County, and our crews reach Elk Grove by way of Highway 99 and Interstate 5 for measuring, delivery, and installation.
Elk Grove is overwhelmingly a city of production homes, and most of them went up in a single long building run from the 1990s through the 2020s. Laguna West came first, a master plan on the west side organized around a lake and a town center, and the Laguna neighborhoods around it, including Stonelake near Interstate 5, followed through the decade. South of Elk Grove Boulevard, Laguna Ridge is the 2000s master plan and is still filling in, and the Franklin corridor has added newer subdivisions beyond it. Across all of it, the kitchen was specified by the builder from a short option list, sized to a standard module, and installed before anyone knew who would cook there.
Two parts of the city are different. Old Town Elk Grove, along Elk Grove Boulevard, still has its early-1900s storefronts and the older homes behind them, where kitchens are smaller, more compartmentalized, and often in need of a wall coming down or a galley being opened up. And on the eastern edge, around Sheldon and out toward Wilton, the pattern shifts to ranchettes and custom homes on acreage, where the kitchen is bigger, the ceilings are often taller, and the conversation turns to full-height storage walls, a working pantry, and an island built to the scale of the room.
Elk Grove is an incorporated city, so building permits for work inside the city limits are issued by the City of Elk Grove rather than by Sacramento County. Wilton and the unincorporated acreage east of the city line fall under the county instead. The distinction matters mostly for projects that move plumbing, gas, or electrical, or that remove a wall; a like-for-like cabinetry replacement is a lighter lift on paper. We tell you early which category your project falls into so there are no surprises mid-build.
Then there is the climate. Elk Grove sits on the valley floor south of Sacramento, and summer afternoons routinely reach 100°F, with strong west sun pushing through the sliders that nearly every production floor plan places off the kitchen or the dining nook. The Delta breeze arrives most evenings and takes the edge off, but it does not change what the cabinetry sees at three in the afternoon. That heat-and-sun load, against cool, damp winters, is the single biggest physical fact we design around in Elk Grove.

Materials and Finishes for the Valley Floor
Dry triple-digit summers and damp winters pull wood in opposite directions over a year, so we build Elk Grove cabinetry to tolerate movement rather than fight it. Doors are frame-and-panel with panels that float in their grooves, wide surfaces use veneer-core plywood rather than solid slabs, and we choose stable, straight-grained cuts for anything long and unsupported. These are quiet decisions that show up years later as doors that still close square.
The west sun shapes the finish conversation. A cabinet face that sits in the afternoon beam from a west-facing slider sees far more UV than the one across the room, and some species and stains shift color under that load more than others. We flag those faces during design and steer toward finishes and species that age evenly, or we plan the layout so the most exposed run is the one you care about least. Painted cabinetry suits the transitional look most Elk Grove homes lean toward, and it handles UV well when the coating system is chosen for it.
Hardware is specified for the long haul: full-extension drawer slides, soft-close hinges, and pulls that stay tight through a kitchen that shares a wall with a hot garage. In production homes the drawers are usually the first thing to fail; in ours, they are the part that convinces people.
How We Work in Elk Grove
- On-site measurement of the real room, not the builder’s marketing floor plan
- Layouts that remove the filler strips and dead corners stock modules leave behind
- Species and finishes chosen for valley heat and west-facing glass
- Pantry and drawer storage planned around how a busy household actually cooks
- Clear guidance on what your scope will require from the City of Elk Grove
- Design, build, and installation by one Rocklin-based team

Process, Timeline, and What an Elk Grove Kitchen Costs
Every Elk Grove project begins with a visit to the house. We measure the room as it is, note where the slider throws its light, where the garage door lands the groceries, and where the existing cabinetry wastes space, and we talk frankly about budget. Design follows, with drawings and samples you can hold, and once the design is approved the cabinetry goes into production in Rocklin.
Because the cabinetry is built for your room rather than pulled from a warehouse, a custom kitchen is a multi-month process from first drawing to final install. Projects start at $25,000. A full kitchen with an island, a pantry wall, and appliance integration lands above that, and a remodel that moves walls or utilities adds the cost of that work as well. We put real numbers to your specific scope after the measure, not before.

Why Elk Grove Kitchens Outgrow Their Builder Cabinetry
A production kitchen is sized to a module, and the module rarely matches the room. The result is the familiar set of compromises: a filler strip beside the refrigerator, a blind corner nobody can reach, uppers that stop a foot short of the ceiling, and a pantry that is really a closet with wire shelves. In Laguna West those kitchens are now old enough that the drawer boxes are tired and the finish has yellowed on the sunny side. In Laguna Ridge and along Franklin Boulevard they are newer and still wrong for the family, which is its own kind of frustration.
Custom cabinetry answers the actual house. We run the uppers to the ceiling or stop them deliberately with a lit display row, turn the blind corner into a working corner, swap base doors for deep drawers that hold pots the way people stack them, and build a pantry with pull-outs sized to the way you shop. In the Sheldon ranchettes, where the room is bigger and the ceiling higher, the same approach scales up into storage walls and an island that can seat the whole table. The style can be anything from painted Shaker to flat slab in a warm veneer, and in Elk Grove it usually lands in the transitional middle.
Beyond the kitchen we build the same way for mudroom drop zones off the garage, home-office walls, media built-ins, and laundry rooms, all from the same workshop to the same standard. Elk Grove sits at the south end of our Sacramento-side work; we also serve Rancho Cordova and Folsom up the Highway 50 corridor, and you can see the whole region on our Sacramento service area page.
Elk Grove Kitchen & Cabinetry FAQs
Questions Elk Grove homeowners ask before replacing builder cabinetry or planning a kitchen remodel.
Do you serve all of Elk Grove, including the newer master plans?
Yes. We design and build cabinetry for homes across the city, from Laguna West and Stonelake on the west side to Laguna Ridge south of Elk Grove Boulevard, the older streets around Old Town, and the acreage homes out toward Sheldon. Our workshop is in Rocklin, in Placer County, and our crews come down for measuring, delivery, and installation.
My Elk Grove home still has the builder’s original cabinets. Can you replace them without a full remodel?
That is the most common Elk Grove project we see. A like-for-like replacement keeps the plumbing, gas, and electrical where they are and swaps the builder-grade boxes for cabinetry built to the real dimensions of the room. You get full-depth drawers, uppers that reach the ceiling, and a pantry that actually works, without opening walls.
Who issues building permits for kitchen work in Elk Grove?
Elk Grove is an incorporated city, so permits for work inside the city limits come from the City of Elk Grove rather than Sacramento County. Homes in Wilton and the unincorporated acreage east of the city line fall under Sacramento County instead. A straight cabinetry replacement usually involves less paperwork than a remodel that moves utilities or removes a wall, and we tell you which category your scope is in before the design is final.
How does the Sacramento Valley climate affect cabinetry in Elk Grove?
Elk Grove summers run to triple digits, with hard afternoon sun through the west-facing sliders most production floor plans put off the kitchen. The Delta breeze cools evenings but does not change the daytime load. We build with floating panels and veneer-core plywood so the cabinetry tolerates the seasonal swing, and we choose finishes that age evenly on sun-facing runs.
Are you a licensed California contractor?
Yes. PineWood Cabinets is a licensed California contractor (CSLB License #1095293) operating as a division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates. We have designed, built, and installed custom cabinetry across the Sacramento region since 2006.
What does a custom kitchen in Elk Grove cost?
Projects start at $25,000. A full kitchen with an island, a pantry wall, and appliance integration lands above that, and a remodel that moves utilities or walls adds the cost of that work. We give you a real number for your specific scope after we have measured the room and agreed on the design, not from a floor plan.
