Custom Cabinetry for Novato, Old Town to Bel Marin Keys

Novato stretches from the hills of Black Point to the lagoons of Bel Marin Keys, and holds everything from 1930s officers’ homes at Hamilton to 1970s ranch tracts in San Marin. PineWood Cabinets designs and builds custom cabinetry for all of it in our Rocklin workshop and installs it with our own crews.

Designing for Novato Homes

PineWood Cabinets is a design-build cabinetry shop for Novato homeowners who want a kitchen made for their specific house, whether that is a Spanish Revival officers’ home, a lagoon-front house, or a 1970s ranch. Cabinetry is designed, built, and finished in our Rocklin workshop in Placer County, and our crews travel to Novato to measure, deliver, and install it.

Novato is the largest city in Marin by area and the most varied in its housing. Old Town, along Grant Avenue, is the original downtown, and the streets around it carry the oldest homes in the city, modest houses from the early 1900s onward with small kitchens at the back. Spreading out from there are the postwar tracts that built most of the city: San Marin to the north, Ignacio to the south, Pleasant Valley and Indian Valley to the west, single-story ranch houses from the 1960s through the 1980s with kitchens that were walled off from the living room and want to be opened now.

Hamilton is the most interesting piece. It began as an Army airfield in the 1930s, became an Air Force base, closed, and was redeveloped into a neighborhood from the late 1990s onward. The result is two housing stocks side by side: the original officers’ homes, Spanish Revival with plaster, tile, and arched openings, now restored and privately owned, and the production homes built across the old base in the 2000s with open plans and builder-grade cabinets that are reaching the end of their life. The first asks for inset, period-appropriate cabinetry; the second asks for a better kitchen in the same footprint.

Bel Marin Keys, east of the freeway, is a waterfront community built on lagoons, with docks at the back of the lots and a kitchen that usually faces the water. Black Point climbs the hill above the Petaluma River in the northeast corner, with steep lots and homes that lean toward the view. Pacheco Valle runs up a wooded canyon in the south of the city, cooler and shadier than the rest of Novato, with the access questions a canyon brings.

Permits follow the city line. Homes inside the limits are permitted by the City of Novato, which covers nearly every neighborhood above. Part of Black Point sits outside the city and is permitted by Marin County instead. For a cabinetry replacement that leaves utilities where they are, this is a light touch either way; for a remodel that moves a sink or opens a wall, we tell you up front which agency you will be dealing with and what the scope triggers.

Novato is the warm end of Marin. It sits well north of the fog line that governs Mill Valley and Sausalito, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. That is an easy climate for wood, and it shifts our attention to sun: which cabinet faces will take afternoon UV through a west-facing slider, and how a species and finish will age under it. Bel Marin Keys is the exception, where the air off the lagoons carries more moisture and we design accordingly.

Materials and Finishes for the Warm End of Marin

Most Novato kitchens are ranch kitchens being opened up, and the material question is about how the cabinetry reads from the living room all day. Painted shaker doors on a face frame, or flat-panel doors in white oak, both work; finished end panels, a furniture-style island, and a consistent door style across the whole run matter more than the species. In Hamilton’s 2000s homes, where the plan is already open, the job is usually proportion: uppers to the ceiling, a real pantry, and drawers where the builder put doors.

The Hamilton officers’ homes and the oldest houses in Old Town want inset doors on a face frame, painted or in a warm stained hardwood, with traditional joinery and floating panels. A Spanish Revival kitchen can take an arched glass-front upper or a stained wood hood that echoes the doorways. These are built the way the houses were.

Novato’s dry summers let us use solid hardwood doors with confidence. The two things we design around are sun on a west-facing run, where we choose a species and finish that age evenly, and the lagoon air at Bel Marin Keys, where we seal end grain and panel backs carefully and favor finish systems that tolerate humidity.

Process, Timeline, and What a Novato Kitchen Costs

It starts with a visit. We measure the room as built, which in a 1970s ranch house usually means a kitchen a little smaller than the plan suggests and a wall you are wondering about, and in a Hamilton officers’ home means plaster walls that are not quite square. We talk about how you cook, where the light comes from, and what the budget is. Design follows with drawings and physical samples, and once approved the cabinetry goes into production in Rocklin.

Because every box is built for your room, a custom kitchen is a multi-month process from first drawing to final install. Projects start at $25,000; a full kitchen with an island, integrated appliances, and a pantry lands above that, and a remodel that opens a wall or moves plumbing adds the cost of that work. Steep driveways at Black Point and canyon access in Pacheco Valle can add time for carry, which we plan for by sizing boxes to the path in. We put numbers to your scope after the measure, not before.

Why Novato Kitchens Are Better Built Than Bought

Stock cabinetry assumes a rectangular room with square walls and utilities that can go anywhere. The Novato ranch house has a window over the sink that sits lower than any stock upper allows, a soffit from 1978, and a new opening to the living room that leaves an odd return. The Hamilton officers’ home has an arched doorway and plaster that moves. The Bel Marin Keys house has a wall of glass to the water that no run of uppers should block. Custom cabinetry is how you answer the house instead of filling gaps with trim.

In practice that means an island sized to the real clearances once the wall comes out, inset doors with the right profile in a 1930s house, and a glass-side run at Bel Marin Keys that looks finished from the dock. The same shop builds the mudroom bench, the home-office wall, and the media built-in to the same standard.

Novato is the north end of our Marin work. We also serve San Rafael just to the south, Petaluma across the county line in Sonoma, and the full county is on our Marin County page.

Novato Kitchen & Cabinetry FAQs

Questions Novato homeowners ask before planning custom cabinetry or a kitchen remodel.

Which Novato neighborhoods do you serve?

All of them: Old Town around Grant Avenue, Hamilton on the former air base, Bel Marin Keys on the lagoons, San Marin, Indian Valley, and Pleasant Valley to the north and west, Pacheco Valle and Ignacio to the south, and Black Point on the hill above the Petaluma River. We are based in Rocklin, in Placer County, and our own crews travel to Novato to measure, deliver, and install.

What is special about a Hamilton kitchen?

Hamilton holds two very different houses on the same streets. The 1930s officers’ homes from the Army airfield era are Spanish Revival, with plaster walls, tile, and small original kitchens that want inset, period-appropriate cabinetry. The homes built when the base was redeveloped in the 2000s are production houses with open plans and builder-grade cabinets that are now due for replacement, and those ask for a full-height, better-proportioned kitchen in the same footprint.

Who issues building permits in Novato?

For homes inside the city limits, the City of Novato issues building permits, which covers Old Town, Hamilton, Bel Marin Keys, San Marin, Indian Valley, Pacheco Valle, and Ignacio. Part of Black Point lies outside the city limits and is permitted by Marin County instead. We tell you which applies to your address at the first meeting, and a cabinetry replacement that leaves utilities in place involves far less than a remodel that moves them.

How does Novato’s climate affect cabinetry?

Novato is the warmest city in Marin, well north of the fog that settles over the southern towns, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters. That is an easy climate for solid wood, and the thing we design around is sun on west- and south-facing cabinet runs. Bel Marin Keys is the exception: homes on the lagoons carry more moisture in the air, so there we seal end grain carefully and choose finish systems that tolerate humidity.

Are you licensed in California?

Yes. PineWood Cabinets is a licensed California contractor (CSLB License #1095293) operating as a division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates, and we have designed, built, and installed custom cabinetry since 2006.

What does a custom kitchen in Novato cost, and how long does it take?

Projects start at $25,000. A full kitchen with an island, integrated appliances, and a pantry lands above that, and a remodel that opens a wall or moves plumbing adds the cost of that work. Because every box is built for your room in our Rocklin workshop, the process runs several months from the first drawing to the final install, and we give you a scoped number after we measure.
