A Bespoke Build for the Coastside
Custom Kitchen in Half Moon Bay, CA
From the cottages of old Spanishtown to the bluff-top homes above Mavericks, we design and build complete custom kitchens engineered for the coast — salt air, fog, and a coastsider's love of cooking included.
A Fully Bespoke Kitchen, Built for Coastside Living
Half Moon Bay sits where Highway 92 spills out of the redwood-shouldered hills and meets the Cabrillo Highway along one of the most dramatic stretches of the San Mateo County coast. It is a town of distinct chapters: the false-front Victorians and the white-steepled Community United Methodist Church of old Spanishtown along Main Street; the surf cottages of Miramar and Princeton-by-the-Sea clustered around Pillar Point Harbor; the newer homes climbing the ridge toward Ocean Colony and the Half Moon Bay Golf Links; and the working ranch and nursery country that still runs inland toward Crystal Springs. A custom kitchen here is not a catalog product dropped into a floor plan. It is a build conceived for a particular house, a particular view, and the particular reality of living within a mile of the Pacific. PineWood Cabinets has been crafting custom cabinetry since 2006, and on the coastside that experience shows in the choices that never appear on a finished kitchen but determine whether it lasts.
A true custom kitchen differs from a remodel or a refacing in one essential way: nothing is assumed. We start from the structure of your home and the way you actually cook, then design and fabricate every cabinet, every run of counter support, every drawer bank and pantry tower to fit. For coastside homeowners that freedom matters, because so many Half Moon Bay houses are anything but standard. The Princeton harbor cottages have low ceilings and quirky additions. The bluff homes above Poplar and Kelly beaches were built to capture the horizon, which means walls of glass and very little conventional upper-cabinet space. The Highway 92 farmhouses carry a century of additions and settling. A bespoke build accommodates all of it.
And then there is the air itself. The marine layer that rolls over Montara Mountain most summer mornings carries salt and persistent humidity that ordinary cabinetry was never engineered to survive. Building a custom kitchen for Half Moon Bay means specifying the right substrates, the right finishes, and the right hardware from the first drawing — not discovering the problem two winters later when the hinges have begun to weep rust.
What a Ground-Up Custom Build Gives a Coastside Home
Because we fabricate everything to order, a Half Moon Bay custom kitchen can answer questions a stock kitchen cannot. How do you store a paddleboard quiver, a crab pot, and a pizza peel in the same room? Where does the fog-day dehumidifier live? How do you keep an island from blocking the only window that frames Pillar Point? These are not problems you solve by choosing a door style. They are solved in the design phase, when cabinetry is still lines on a plan and anything is still possible.
Our coastside builds lean on full-extension, soft-close hardware in marine-rated stainless rather than the standard plated steel that corrodes within sight of the water. We specify moisture-stable plywood box construction over particleboard, conversion-varnish and catalyzed finishes that shrug off humidity, and dovetailed solid-wood drawer boxes that hold their joinery through the seasonal swing between damp winters and dry inland summers. The wood species are chosen for the light: rift-cut white oak and painted maple read beautifully under the diffuse coastal sky, where high-gloss surfaces can look flat and gray.
A custom build is also the only honest way to integrate the appliances coastside cooks actually want — a true vented range hood for searing the day's catch, a generous farmhouse sink for cleaning Dungeness crab, a tucked-away coffee station for the fog-bound mornings — without the awkward filler panels and dead corners that betray a kitchen assembled from off-the-shelf parts.

How We Build a Custom Kitchen in Half Moon Bay
A bespoke build is a sequence, not a purchase. Each phase is deliberate, and each is grounded in the realities of your coastside home.
Coastside Site Study
We visit your home, measure to the eighth, study how the light and the marine layer move through the room, and learn how you cook and entertain on the coast before a single line is drawn.
Bespoke Design
We develop a complete custom layout with materials, finishes, hardware, and 3D renderings, resolving the view lines, storage puzzles, and salt-air specifications particular to your house.
Hand Fabrication
Every cabinet, drawer box, and millwork run is built to your drawings using moisture-stable construction, dovetailed joinery, and catalyzed coastal finishes, with reviews at key milestones.
Careful Installation
We scribe and set each piece on site, coordinate with your other trades, protect existing finishes, and commission the finished kitchen so every door, drawer, and surface performs from day one.
Why a Custom Build Makes Sense in Half Moon Bay
The coastside rewards kitchens that are designed for it — not adapted to it after the fact.
A Coast That Tests Everything
Salt and Fog: Homes within reach of Pillar Point Harbor and the open beaches live in a near-constant marine environment. A custom build lets us specify corrosion-resistant hardware and humidity-stable construction from the start, rather than retrofitting against the damage later.
No Two Houses Alike: The coastside is a patchwork of eras and styles, from 1920s harbor cottages to ridge-top contemporaries near the golf links. Stock cabinetry forces compromise. A bespoke build is shaped to the actual house, additions, slopes, and all.
The View Is the Point: So much of Half Moon Bay was built to face the water. Designing a kitchen here means protecting sightlines to the harbor and horizon, which often calls for the unconventional storage solutions only a custom build can provide.
How Coastsiders Cook
From Harbor to Table: With the Princeton fishing fleet and the weekend farmers and flower nurseries along Highway 92, coastside cooking is seasonal and hands-on. We design prep zones, sinks, and ventilation around crab, salmon, and the garden harvest.
Made for Gathering: Whether it is the crowd before the Pumpkin Festival or a quiet foggy weekend, coastside kitchens are gathering rooms. We plan islands and seating for the way these homes really fill up.
Crafted Since 2006: PineWood Cabinets has been building custom cabinetry since 2006 from our Roseville, California workshop, and we bring that bench experience to the specific demands of a home on the coast.
From the harbor cottages of Princeton to the ridge homes above Ocean Colony, we build custom kitchens that belong to Half Moon Bay and last in its climate.
Start Your Half Moon Bay BuildHalf Moon Bay Custom Kitchen Questions
What coastside homeowners ask before starting a fully custom build.
How is a custom build different from refacing my existing kitchen?
Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes and only changes the doors and surfaces. A custom build replaces everything, which lets us correct the layout, recover dead corners, and re-engineer the construction for the coast. In older Spanishtown and Highway 92 homes, where the original boxes are often out of square or already humidity-damaged, a full build is frequently the more durable choice.
Can a custom kitchen really stand up to the salt air near the harbor?
Yes, when it is specified for it from the start. For homes near Pillar Point and the open beaches we use marine-rated stainless hardware, moisture-stable plywood box construction, and catalyzed finishes that resist the humidity of the marine layer. The protection is designed in during fabrication, not added on later, which is exactly why a bespoke build suits the coastside so well.
My bluff-top home has very little wall space. How do you handle storage?
The view homes above Poplar, Kelly, and Dunes beaches trade wall space for glass, so we move storage off the sightline. That usually means a working island with deep drawer banks, a tall pantry wall on the closed side of the room, and base cabinetry organized for efficiency. Because every piece is built to order, we can hide significant capacity without ever blocking the horizon.
Do you handle permits and coordinate with my other trades on the coast?
A full custom kitchen often touches electrical, plumbing, and occasionally structure, which in Half Moon Bay can involve city permitting and, for some properties, coastal review. We coordinate the cabinetry scope with your contractor, electrician, and plumber so installation lands cleanly, and we time our fabrication to the rest of the project schedule. Timelines vary with the scope of work and the permitting path for your specific home.
