For Architects From Healdsburg to Petaluma
Sonoma County Architects, Your Detail Held in Hardwood
Dimensioned shop drawings, held reveals and period-correct inset work for the vineyard estates, farmhouses and river-town Victorians you are drawing, built in our Rocklin shop.
Sonoma County is a constellation of distinct towns rather than a single place, and an architect drawing here moves between vocabularies: vineyard estates along Westside Road and Dry Creek near Healdsburg, ranch properties and newer estates on the narrow floor of the Valley of the Moon, farmhouses and cottages toward Sebastopol, Forestville and Occidental, and the Victorians and Craftsman homes of Petaluma, Sonoma and Santa Rosa’s McDonald Avenue district. This page explains how PineWood supports a Sonoma County drawing set: the shop drawings we return, the reveal and tolerance conventions we hold, the inset and painted work the older stock calls for, and how a Rocklin shop lands finished casework across a spread-out county. We are a licensed California contractor (CSLB #1095293), founded in 2006 and operating as the cabinetry division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates, with design and build under one roof.
Your sections, our shop drawings, one gate
Supporting the Drawing Set
We start from your plans, elevations, sections and finish schedule and translate them into detailed, dimensioned shop drawings, with construction, joinery, hardware and finish called out explicitly. Your review and approval of those drawings is the single gate in our workflow; nothing is released to the floor until you have signed off, and changes are far cheaper on paper than in hardwood. We field-verify the room first, which in a river-town Victorian is where the real scribe numbers and the real ceiling heights come from. Where a drawn detail needs a constructability conversation, we bring it to you on the shop drawings with a proposed solution that protects the proportion you drew. The whole sequence is on our trade process page.
A complete millwork section lets the first shop-drawing round be a confirmation rather than a translation. Our specifications reference lists what to call out: construction type (inset face-frame or frameless) with target reveals, species and veneer cut with any grain-matching intent, box and drawer substrates, door and edge profiles, finish system with color and sheen, functional and decorative hardware with finishes, and any code or performance requirement. It also explains how we build to it: veneer-core hardwood plywood boxes, solid hardwood face frames with mortise-and-tenon and dowelled joinery, five-piece cope-and-stick or slab doors, and dovetailed solid-wood drawer boxes on concealed full-extension soft-close undermount slides.
Conventions our drawings carry
Reveals, Tolerances and Inset Work
Our shop drawings follow ANSI/AWI 0620-2024. The critical reveal is a nominal 3.2 mm, an eighth of an inch, with a permitted uniform variance of plus or minus .031 inch at Premium grade, .063 at Custom and .094 at Economy; door and drawer-front edges align within .031, .047 or .063 inch by grade. For inset face-frame construction, the idiom so much of the county’s older stock asks for, the reveals beyond the critical one are as specified, indicated or agreed, which means your section is the document that defines them. The standard defines inconspicuous as a viewing distance, 24 inches at Premium, 48 at Custom and 72 at Economy, and if the documents reference it without naming a grade, Custom applies by default.
- Datum. Plumb and level within 3.2 mm in 2,438 mm, an eighth of an inch over 96 inches, established across the room rather than wall by wall.
- Scribe. Filler to a maximum installed width of two inches at Premium (scribe moulding not permitted) and three inches at Custom; inside-corner fillers equal in width; allowance drawn into the elevation.
- Flushness. Wood-to-wood flat field joints at 0.4 mm Premium and 0.8 mm Custom, feeler-gauge tested on the product as installed.
- Panels and paneling. Expansion-joint reveals sized at panel length multiplied by 0.004; caulked joints drawn at approximately 3.2 mm.
- Preconditions. Blocking confirmed as indicated in the contract documents; interior environmental controls maintained before, during and after installation.

The County’s Architectural Vocabulary
For the vineyard and estate homes around Healdsburg, Kenwood and the Sonoma Valley, the drawings run to richer hardwoods, stone, and integrated wine storage sized to the way a household collects and pours, with the kitchen planned around afternoon light and the flow between the cooktop and the terrace outside. For the farmhouses and cottages of the western county, the vocabulary is honest, warm woods, painted Shaker and inset doors, and unfussy hardware that suits a rural setting. For the in-town homes of Petaluma, with its protected downtown of iron-front and Victorian buildings, and of Sonoma and Santa Rosa, the work respects the period of the house: inset cabinetry that reads as original to a Victorian or Craftsman while delivering modern function behind the doors. The oak, built-in and proportion questions those Craftsman sets raise are covered in our guide to Craftsman bungalow kitchens.
Across all of it these are working kitchens. Sonoma County is a place where people cook, preserve, bake and pour, and the sections we draw reflect that: generous prep space, real pantry storage, drawers organized for how a household uses the room, and a clear path from the cooking zone to whatever lies beyond the back door, whether a covered porch in Sebastopol or a vineyard terrace above Dry Creek.
Coast to Mayacamas
Climate and Material Choices
The county runs from the Sonoma Coast and the redwoods of the lower Russian River inland to the Mayacamas ridge, so the exposure a kitchen faces changes with the address: cooler, damper air under the redwoods and toward the coast, warm dry afternoons on the vineyard benches. That is a specification question before it is a shop question. Veneer-core plywood casework, floating panels in frame-and-panel doors and solid domestic hardwoods selected for stability respond to seasonal movement; hand-applied finishes carry tone and warmth where that is the point, and sprayed conversion-varnish systems carry resilience in kitchens and baths. We prepare samples on the actual project species for your approval before production and can match a specified sheen or an existing reference.
A spread-out county, one point of contact
Logistics From Rocklin
Because the county is spread out, we treat each project as a study of its specific location and plan the site measure, sample review, delivery and installation as scheduled trips from Rocklin rather than ad hoc visits. Casework is built and finished to completion in the shop, in controlled conditions rather than on a vineyard site, and our own crews install it in a window sequenced with the general contractor. How we coordinate with builders in wine country is on our Napa Valley builders page, the nearest trade page to the county; the same work from the owner’s side is described on the Sonoma County homeowner hub. You keep a single point of contact from the first review to the walk-through, and the people who drew the shop drawings are connected to the people who built the casework.
Questions from the drawing side
Architect FAQ, Sonoma County
How do you support a Sonoma County drawing set from Rocklin?
We begin from your plans, elevations, sections and finish schedule, field-verify the room, and return dimensioned shop drawings for your approval before anything is cut. Casework is built and finished to completion in our Rocklin shop and installed by our own crews, with delivery sequenced with the general contractor. We travel throughout the county for site measures and installation.
What reveal convention do your shop drawings carry?
ANSI/AWI 0620-2024: a nominal 3.2 mm critical reveal, an eighth of an inch, with a uniform variance of plus or minus .031 inch at Premium grade, .063 at Custom and .094 at Economy, and door and drawer-front edges aligned within .031, .047 or .063 inch by grade. If your documents reference the standard without naming a grade, Custom applies by default.
Can you match the inset and painted Shaker work the farmhouses and in-town Victorians call for?
Yes. Inset face-frame construction, with doors and drawer fronts set flush within a solid-wood face frame, is the traditional idiom for period and transitional interiors and carries the tightest tolerances. We build it with mortise-and-tenon and dowelled face frames, five-piece cope-and-stick doors and painted finishes built in a tight-grained hardwood, and we match period profiles from a sample or a measured section.
How is integrated wine storage drawn and specified?
As casework with a performance requirement. Call out the bottle count and racking format, the conditioned or unconditioned status of the room, the species and finish, and any glazing or hardware; we draw the racking, the sections and the transitions to adjacent cabinetry on the shop drawings. Where the room is conditioned, the installation standard’s requirement for interior environmental controls before, during and after install applies as it would anywhere.
How much scribe can be drawn into a run in an older Petaluma or Sonoma house?
Scribe filler is capped at a maximum installed width of two inches at Premium, with no scribe moulding permitted, and three inches of filler or moulding at Custom; inside-corner fillers where two elevations meet must be equal in width. The site measure tells us the real number, and it goes into the elevation before a box is built.
Which Sonoma County towns do you draw for?
Healdsburg, Geyserville and Cloverdale in the north; Santa Rosa, Windsor, Rohnert Park and Cotati through the central county; historic Sonoma and the Valley of the Moon towns of Glen Ellen and Kenwood; Petaluma; Sebastopol; and the Russian River communities to the west. Each is treated as its own kind of house rather than a single template.
