Quick Answer

What does a kitchen remodel cost in Nevada County?

For cabinetry, the PineWood pricing engine produces $36,728 – $58,857 for a sixteen-foot Nevada City or Grass Valley galley with painted raised-panel doors, $58,260 – $93,495 for a twenty-six-foot Lake Wildwood island kitchen, $96,889 – $155,624 for a twenty-eight-foot Tahoe Donner kitchen in solid wood, and $130,448 – $209,401 for a thirty-six-foot Martis Valley estate. Projects start at $25,000.

Nevada City, Grass Valley, and the Town of Truckee issue their own permits; the Nevada County Building Department covers the rest at an hourly rate of $191.20 per its FY 26/27 schedule. Run your own inputs in the calculator.

Key Takeaways

  • The engine applies no county, elevation, or travel factor; the cabinetry is built in Rocklin and reaches the western county by Highways 49 and 20 and Truckee over Donner Summit. Projects start at $25,000.
  • Nevada City and Grass Valley period homes settle on short runs and raised-panel or frame-and-panel fronts: $36,728 – $58,857 for 16 feet. Lake Wildwood and Lake of the Pines island kitchens: $58,260 – $93,495 for 26 feet.
  • Tahoe Donner working mountain kitchens in solid wood: $96,889 – $155,624 for 28 feet. Martis Valley estates: $130,448 – $209,401 for 36 feet.
  • Nevada City, Grass Valley, and the Town of Truckee issue their own permits; the Nevada County Building Department covers Penn Valley, Lake Wildwood, Alta Sierra, Lake of the Pines, and the rural parcels.
  • The county’s FY 26/27 schedule sets an hourly rate of $191.20 effective September 1, 2026: OTC processing $95.60, non-OTC processing $191.20, inspection unit $191.20, reinspection $191.20 per visit. Construction permit and plan review fees are in an attached schedule the department supplies.
  • Elevation changes the specification toward frame-and-panel construction and natural finishes; historic districts, lake-community associations, and Truckee design guidelines change the schedule, not the band.

What Does Custom Cabinetry Cost in Nevada County?

Nevada County is two counties joined by a mountain pass, and the engine prices both halves the same way. What differs is the specification each half’s houses ask for.

PineWood builds every cabinet in its Rocklin workshop and reaches the western county by Highway 49 and Highway 20, and Truckee over Donner Summit on Interstate 80. The pricing engine behind our kitchen cost calculator applies no county, city, elevation, or travel factor, so a kitchen in Grass Valley and a kitchen in Tahoe Donner built to the same specification get the same band. Projects start at $25,000. The hub guide explains the engine’s arithmetic; this page runs it on the inputs Nevada County’s houses tend to call for.

The table shows four of them. A Nevada City or Grass Valley galley of sixteen feet, replaced in fully custom plywood with painted raised-panel fronts that read as if they belonged, produces $36,728 – $58,857. A lake-community island kitchen of twenty-six feet in natural-finish plywood produces $58,260 – $93,495. A working mountain kitchen in Tahoe Donner, twenty-eight feet of solid wood with slab doors and an island, produces $96,889 – $155,624. A Martis Valley estate on thirty-six feet of U-shaped solid wood produces $130,448 – $209,401. The spread is the drivers spoke of this guide applied to four houses, and none of it is a county factor.

The engine prices cabinetry only. Countertops, appliances, plumbing, electrical, flooring, lighting, demolition, and the general contractor are separate lines; for whole-project tiers that include them, see our journal’s California cost article, which also notes that mountain communities carry travel and seasonal considerations in the trades. What this page adds is the permit office and its fee schedule, which for Nevada County we have been able to fetch and quote, and the conditions of the county’s two climates.

Which Nevada County Houses Call for Which Inputs?

Gold-rush towns, gated lake communities, and a mountain town at 5,800 feet and above. Each settles some of the engine’s inputs before the first meeting.

Nevada City’s downtown is a National Register historic district of Victorian and Italianate buildings, and the residential streets climbing away from Broad Street carry the same stock: wood-frame Victorians, cottages, and later Craftsman and bungalow infill. Grass Valley, down Highway 49, kept a working-town character with miners’ cottages near downtown, mid-century ranches on the slopes, and newer subdivisions on the edges. Kitchens in the older stock were service rooms at the back of the house, so remodels tend to recover space from a pantry, porch, or back bedroom. Walls are rarely plumb and floors rarely level, so cabinetry is scribed to the house. In engine terms that settles door style toward inset-style frame-and-panel or raised-panel fronts, a painted or stained finish, and a short run; the galley scenario in the table carries it, and the Nevada City and Grass Valley pages go into the specifics.

West and south of Grass Valley the county opens into oak woodland, and this is where the gated and semi-rural communities sit. Lake Wildwood in Penn Valley is a gated community around a private lake and golf course with homes from the 1970s through the 2000s and an architectural review process for exterior changes. Lake of the Pines is a similar gated lake-and-golf community near the Placer line, with an Auburn address but in Nevada County. Alta Sierra is larger wooded lots with single-family homes from the 1960s onward. These homes share an era: open plans, vaulted ceilings, lake or ridge views, and original oak or laminate cabinetry a new owner wants gone. The shells are sound, so the work is layout, storage, and finish; in the engine that reads as an island layout facing the view, plywood with a natural or painted finish, and the adders. The Penn Valley and Lake Wildwood page covers that community in detail.

On the eastern side of Donner Summit, the Town of Truckee sits at roughly 5,800 feet in its historic core and rises to around 6,500 feet in Tahoe Donner. Its housing runs from railroad-era buildings on Commercial Row to thousands of cabins and full-time homes in Tahoe Donner and Glenshire. These are working mountain kitchens: wet gear comes in through them, groceries are hauled up from the valley in bulk, and a household of two becomes twelve on a holiday weekend. The specification leans toward solid wood or plywood in white oak, walnut, or alder with a natural finish, frame-and-panel construction for the humidity swing, and designer-tier hardware for the duty cycle; the mountain scenario in the table is this house.

South of Interstate 80, the Martis Valley holds Truckee’s gated, architect-driven communities: Martis Camp, Lahontan, Schaffer’s Mill, and Gray’s Crossing north of town. Each has its own design guidelines, and the homes are contemporary mountain architecture with timber, stone, and steel used honestly. Cabinetry is expected to match the architecture, with full-height walls of walnut or white oak, integrated appliances, and millwork that continues through pantry, bar, and great room. In the engine that is more linear feet, a U-shape or island, solid wood with slab doors and a natural finish, and designer hardware; the estate scenario carries it. Our Truckee hub and the Lake Tahoe cost page in this guide cover the mountain side in more depth.

Who Issues the Permit in Nevada County, and What Does It Cost?

Three incorporated jurisdictions issue their own permits; everything else goes through the Nevada County Building Department, whose fee schedule for FY 26/27 we have fetched and quote below.

Nevada County has three incorporated jurisdictions, each issuing its own building permits: the City of Nevada City, the City of Grass Valley, and the Town of Truckee, which covers Tahoe Donner, Glenshire, Gray’s Crossing, Schaffer’s Mill, Lahontan, Martis Camp, and downtown. Everything outside those boundaries is unincorporated and goes through the Nevada County Building Department: Penn Valley and Lake Wildwood, Alta Sierra, Lake of the Pines, and the rural parcels around all three towns. The county’s building FAQ states that the department is on the bottom floor of the Eric Rood Administration Center, takes walk-ins daily from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and accepts applications online through its Citizen Access Portal.

The Nevada County Building Department’s Fee Schedule FY 26/27 sets the department’s hourly rate at $191.20, effective September 1, 2026, up from $185.48 in FY 25/26, and prices most of its services in units of that rate. Permit processing for an over-the-counter permit is half an hour, $95.60; for a permit that is not over the counter it is one hour, $191.20. An inspection unit, one site visit, is $191.20, and additional inspection units are added in half-hour increments at $95.60. A reinspection is $191.20 for each site visit required to approve the portion of work for which an inspection was requested, assessed before project final. A pre-alteration inspection, one site visit to establish the prerequisites or feasibility of a permitted activity, is $191.20.

The construction permit inspection fees and plan review fees themselves, codes B201 to B215 and B221 to B235 in the schedule, are listed as “see attached schedule,” and that attachment is not part of the document we fetched; the county’s FAQ says fees vary by type of structure or permitted work, that fee estimate handouts are published for new residences in the eastern and western county, and that the department will estimate a fee by phone or email given the square footage and structure type. So the figures above are the schedule’s unit rates for the processing, inspection, and reinspection components of a kitchen permit, not a total; the total for a described scope comes from the department. The three incorporated jurisdictions publish their own schedules.

What Do Access, Elevation, and Review Change?

Two climates, two kinds of access, and three kinds of review. None changes the cabinetry band; each changes the specification or the schedule.

The western county has a foothill climate: long, hot, dry summers, wet winters with occasional snow, and strong sun on south- and west-facing rooms. The cabinetry concern is heat and ultraviolet light, so we choose finishes that resist yellowing and fading and keep solid-wood panels free to move within their frames. Truckee, at 5,800 feet and above, is a different problem: cold dry winters, bright dry summers, and an indoor humidity swing between a heated house and one shut up for a month that moves wood. For Truckee we favor stable engineered panels where a flat surface matters, frame-and-panel construction that gives solid wood room, and finishes that tolerate the cycle. Those choices live inside the engine’s material and finish tiers; they are not a surcharge.

Access differs in the same way. A Grass Valley subdivision or an Alta Sierra lot is a driveway and a garage. A Nevada City Victorian with a narrow side yard and a back-porch kitchen is a carry. A Tahoe Donner cabin on a steep lot, or a Martis Camp home reached through a gate on a road that is plowed on a schedule, is a question of how many crew-days the installation takes and when in the year it can happen; crews reach Truckee over Donner Summit, and winter closures on Interstate 80 are a scheduling fact. The engine does not price any of this; the site visit in the first phase of our process plans for it.

Review comes in three forms. Nevada City’s downtown historic district and Grass Valley’s historic core may require city review for exterior changes, which rarely reaches an interior kitchen but matters once a window or door is touched. Lake Wildwood and Lake of the Pines each run an association architectural review on exterior changes in addition to the public permit. Truckee’s gated communities, Martis Camp, Lahontan, Schaffer’s Mill, and Gray’s Crossing, each have design guidelines layered on the town’s permit. None adds a line to the engine; each can add time, and the timeline spoke in this guide explains how to plan for it.

How Should a Nevada County Homeowner Build the Budget?

The engine band for your house, the trades from a whole-project tier, the county’s unit rates as the components of a permit, and elevation and review as schedule.

Run the calculator with the measured run and the inputs your house suggests from the table, then change one input at a time. For a Nevada City Victorian that is usually a conversation about door style and how much space a reworked layout can recover; for a Lake Wildwood home it is about the island and the view; for Tahoe Donner it is about material and finish for the climate and hardware for the duty cycle; for the Martis Valley it is about how far the millwork program runs. The drivers spoke ranks each of those against a fixed baseline.

Then add the trades from a whole-project tier in our journal’s California cost article, which gives a breakdown by trade and notes that mountain communities carry travel and seasonal considerations in the trades that a valley project does not. Read the engine’s band as the cabinetry line inside that tier. For the permit, use the county’s unit rates above to understand what the processing and inspection components will be built from, and ask the department for a total against a described scope; for Nevada City, Grass Valley, or Truckee, ask that jurisdiction.

Finally, treat the county’s conditions as schedule. Identify the jurisdiction in the first meeting, apply as soon as the design is fixed, book the countertop fabricator against the install date, and, for Truckee, plan the installation around the season and the summit. The Nevada County hub covers the county’s communities one by one, the Nevada City, Grass Valley, Penn Valley, and Lake of the Pines pages go deeper on the western county, and the Truckee hub covers the mountain side. A design consultation turns the band into a figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom kitchen cost in Nevada County?
For cabinetry, the PineWood pricing engine produces $36,728 – $58,857 for a sixteen-foot Nevada City or Grass Valley galley with painted raised-panel doors, $58,260 – $93,495 for a twenty-six-foot Lake Wildwood island kitchen in natural-finish plywood, $96,889 – $155,624 for a twenty-eight-foot Tahoe Donner kitchen in solid wood, and $130,448 – $209,401 for a thirty-six-foot Martis Valley estate. Projects start at $25,000. The engine applies no county or elevation factor.
Who issues the building permit for a kitchen remodel in Nevada County?
The City of Nevada City, the City of Grass Valley, or the Town of Truckee if the home is inside one of those; otherwise the Nevada County Building Department, which covers Penn Valley and Lake Wildwood, Alta Sierra, Lake of the Pines, and the rural parcels. The county’s FAQ states the department is at the Eric Rood Administration Center, takes walk-ins from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and accepts applications through its Citizen Access Portal.
What is the Nevada County Building Department’s hourly rate?
$191.20 per hour, effective September 1, 2026, per the department’s Fee Schedule FY 26/27, up from $185.48 in FY 25/26. Over-the-counter permit processing is half an hour at $95.60; non-over-the-counter processing is one hour at $191.20; an inspection unit is $191.20 per site visit, with additional units at $95.60 per half hour; a reinspection is $191.20 per visit; and a pre-alteration inspection is $191.20.
What will a kitchen permit cost in total in unincorporated Nevada County?
The schedule lists the construction permit inspection and plan review fees as “see attached schedule,” and that attachment was not part of the document we fetched, so this page does not quote a total. The county’s FAQ says fees vary by structure type and permitted work and that the department will estimate a fee by phone or email given the square footage and structure type. The unit rates above are the components a total is built from.
Does a Truckee kitchen cost more than a Grass Valley kitchen?
Not in the cabinetry band for the same specification; the engine has no elevation or travel factor. A Truckee kitchen tends to cost more because its house asks for solid wood or plywood in a natural finish, frame-and-panel construction for the humidity swing, and designer hardware for the duty cycle, and because access over Donner Summit and the season affect the installation schedule rather than the band.
What is not included in the Nevada County ranges on this page?
Countertops, appliances, plumbing, electrical, flooring, lighting, demolition, and the general contractor. The engine prices cabinetry only. For whole-project tiers that include those trades, see the journal article on what a custom kitchen costs in California, which also discusses mountain-community travel and seasonal considerations in the trades.
