Dressing rooms, studies and library walls for Los Lagos to Folsom Lake, built minutes away in Rocklin
Fitted Closets, Offices and Libraries for Granite Bay Estates
Granite Bay houses have the primary suites, the studies and the ceiling heights to do this properly: a dressing room with an island, an office that faces the pool without squinting at it, a library wall that meets the ceiling. PineWood Cabinets designs that millwork to the room, builds it in our Rocklin workshop a few miles up the road, and installs it with our own crews.

What This Service Means in a Granite Bay House
For a Granite Bay estate, this service means replacing the wire-shelved walk-in and the improvised study with fitted millwork: a dressing room, a home office or a library designed to the room and detailed to match the rest of the house, built in our Rocklin workshop in Placer County a few miles away, and installed by our own crews. We build the woodwork; a licensed electrician connects the lighting.
The four spaces on our libraries, closets and offices page all turn up here, but the dressing room and the office lead, and both usually arrive as part of a whole-house millwork program rather than on their own. The homes are large, custom from the start and now two or three decades old, and what they came with is a builder-fitted closet and a study that has been waiting for real millwork since the house was finished.
Fixed Frames, Adjustable Interiors, Lighting and Hardware
A builder closet is an adjustable system without a frame: wire or laminate shelving on standards, screwed to the drywall. A fitted dressing room keeps the adjustability and adds the frame. End panels, a top rail, an island, seating and anything that meets the architecture are fixed millwork, so the room reads as finished; inside that frame the hanging sections and shelves sit on concealed adjustable supports so the wardrobe can change without a cabinetmaker. In a Granite Bay primary suite the floor area for a true dressing room is already there, and the island with drawers on both faces, a full-length mirror and a bench are what turn the closet into a room.
The interior is planned around what is actually kept there: double hang and long hang in the proportion the wardrobe needs, drawers with lined trays for jewelry and watches, pull-out hampers, valet rods, shoe shelving that can be re-pitched, and hidden storage where the room has a corner to give. Cedar is the classic closet species for its natural insect resistance and scent; maple suits a lighter contemporary room; pine is the usual choice when the interior will be painted; walnut and cherry carry the island and the visible frame where the dressing room is meant to match a walnut kitchen or bar. Every drawer and pull-out runs on full-extension, soft-close hardware.
An office is a piece of fixed millwork with an adjustable interior. The desk, the tall units and the panel behind the work surface are fixed and built to carry equipment and books; shelving above sits on concealed supports. File storage is built as full-extension drawers rather than a cabinet with a door, and cable management is designed in from the first drawing, with a chase behind the desk, grommets at the surface and an equipment bay that stays reachable for maintenance and upgrades. Work-surface height is agreed with the person who will sit there. In a Granite Bay house the office frequently doubles as the room where the household runs itself, so the desk is planned for two screens and a printer that disappears behind a door.
Libraries and studies are fixed millwork throughout: shelves let into dadoes with a solid hardwood front edge, kept to spans short enough to stay flat under a full load for decades, a face frame aligned with the room and crown that meets the ceiling, which in these tall rooms means a cornice stacked from more than one profile rather than a single crown. Oak is the species we favor where shelving carries the most weight, walnut and cherry where the room is formal and meant to match the great-room bar. A rolling ladder needs a continuous rail fixed into the millwork, so it is designed in rather than added later.
Lighting is integrated rather than applied: low-voltage LED strip in channels routed under shelves and inside hanging rods, with the drivers in a concealed, serviceable location so nothing is sealed behind a fixed panel. We build the millwork to receive the lighting and a licensed electrician makes the connections. Finishes answer the valley sun and the glass; a clear finish lets walnut and cherry deepen, and a sprayed painted finish over pine or a stable substrate handles strong daylight well when the coating is chosen for it. Our hardware engineering guide explains how slides and hinges are rated.

Why Granite Bay Homes Are Ready for This
Granite Bay is unincorporated Placer County, and it never densified the way Roseville did next door; it grew through the 1990s and 2000s as a collection of custom homes on half-acre and larger lots, strung along Douglas Boulevard from the Roseville line out to Folsom Lake and the state recreation area. The best-known addresses are in gated communities such as Los Lagos, Wexford, Shelborne and Hidden Lakes, while Treelake Village and Granite Bay Hills hold established neighborhoods and larger parcels in the rolling terrain above the lake. These are two-story customs and sprawling single-levels with a pool, mature oaks and tall rooms, and because they were custom from the start they have the primary suites, the studies and the formal rooms that this work needs. The community as a whole is covered on our Granite Bay page.
What the original houses share is their age. A primary suite finished in 1998 or 2004 came with a large walk-in closet on wire shelving, and the study off the entry or the bonus room upstairs was left as four walls and carpet for the owner to furnish. Two decades on, the household wants the closet to work like a dressing room, the study to work like an office and the formal living room nobody uses to become a library. And because these homes entertain, the remodel almost always runs past the kitchen into a butler’s pantry, a great-room bar, the office and the primary suite, all detailed to one door style, species and finish so the house reads as one design. The dressing room, office and library are drawn in that same hand.
Jurisdiction is simple. Granite Bay addresses get their building permits from the Placer County Community Development Resource Agency, not from a city, because there is no city. Fitted cabinetry installed in an existing room generally does not need one; adding circuits for integrated lighting or an office does, and we settle that scope with a licensed electrician before design is final. Several of the gated communities run HOA design review, which concerns the exterior and rarely touches an interior room. We raise both at the design stage.
Climate is the valley’s with a little foothill elevation: long, hot, dry summers with highs past 100 degrees and mild, wet winters, and the rooms open onto the pool or the lake through big sliders and window walls. A desk or bookcase in the afternoon beam from a west-facing window sees far more light than one across the room, so we flag those faces during design, steer toward woods and finishes that age evenly, build long runs from stable, straight-grained stock and veneered panels, and let panels float in their frames so doors still close square after a decade of seasonal swings. Our workshop is in Rocklin, a few miles up Douglas Boulevard or Sierra College Boulevard, so follow-up visits and final adjustments are easy to arrange.
Process, Timeline and Budget in Granite Bay
Every project begins at the house. We measure the room, note where the sun falls and which wall faces the pool, and talk through what the space has to hold: how much hangs long, how many pairs of shoes, how many screens on the desk, how many linear feet of books. For a Granite Bay estate that conversation usually covers the whole millwork program, so the dressing room, the office and the library are designed alongside the kitchen and bar rather than after them. Design follows with drawings, material samples and renderings. Once approved, the millwork goes into production in our Rocklin workshop and arrives ready to install.
Projects start at $25,000. A fitted dressing room, a built-in office or a library wall is a multi-month process from first drawing to final adjustment, because every piece is built for the room rather than pulled from stock, and a whole-house program is longer. We give a realistic schedule after the measure. Because the shop is a few miles away, a visit to see species and finishes in daylight, delivery and any adjustment that comes up on site are all quick to arrange.
For kitchens and bars in the same homes, see our Granite Bay kitchen page and the Placer County hub; for the primary bath that usually sits next to the dressing room, our Granite Bay vanities page.
Granite Bay Closet, Office and Library Questions
What Granite Bay homeowners ask before replacing builder closets and improvised studies.
What do Granite Bay primary suites need to become a real dressing room?
A frame. The 1990s and 2000s customs here have large walk-in closets fitted with wire or laminate shelving on standards, so the floor area is already there. A fitted dressing room adds fixed end panels, a top rail, an island with drawers on both faces and seating, so the room reads as finished, and keeps adjustable hanging and shelving inside that frame so the wardrobe can change without a cabinetmaker.
How do you plan a home office in a house that opens to the pool through glass?
The desk faces the glass and the tall units take the interior wall. A desk or bookcase in the afternoon beam from a west-facing window sees far more light than one across the room, so we flag the exposed faces during design, choose species and finishes that age evenly, and route the equipment bay, file drawers and cable chase to the wall that never sees the sun.
Fixed millwork or an adjustable system?
Both, in the right places. A library or a paneled study wants fixed millwork, shelves let into dadoes, a face frame aligned with the room and crown that meets the ceiling, because it reads as architecture. A dressing room wants adjustable interiors inside a fixed frame, because the wardrobe changes long before the cabinetry does. Most Granite Bay projects are that hybrid, and the office sits between the two.
Can the closet, office and library match the kitchen and bar millwork?
That is usually the point. Granite Bay remodels run past the kitchen into a butler’s pantry, a great-room bar, a home office and the primary suite, all detailed to one door style, species and finish so the house reads as one design. We draw the dressing room, the office and the library in that same hand, and build them in the same shop as the kitchen, so the match is real rather than approximate.
Who issues the permit, and does the HOA review interior cabinetry?
Granite Bay is unincorporated Placer County, so permits come from the Placer County Community Development Resource Agency rather than a city. Fitted cabinetry installed in an existing room generally does not need one; adding circuits for integrated lighting or an office does, and a licensed electrician makes those connections. HOA design review in the gated communities concerns the exterior and rarely touches an interior room.
What does a Granite Bay closet, office or library cost, and how long does it take?
Projects start at $25,000. A fitted dressing room, a built-in office or a library wall is a multi-month process from first drawing to final adjustment, because every piece is built for the room in our Rocklin workshop a few miles up Douglas Boulevard or Sierra College Boulevard rather than pulled from stock. We give a realistic schedule once the room has been measured and the design agreed.
