Golf-community kitchen cabinetry concept for a Whitney Oaks home in Rocklin, California

Rocklin’s master-planned hillside golf community of 1990s and 2000s custom homes

Golf-Community Kitchens for Whitney Oaks Homes

Whitney Oaks occupies the hills of north Rocklin, a master-planned community built around its golf course with larger lots and a higher share of custom and semi-custom homes than the city’s production tracts. PineWood Cabinets designs, builds, and installs kitchen cabinetry for those homes from its workshop a few minutes away in Rocklin.

What Sets a Whitney Oaks House Apart

Whitney Oaks is the master-planned golf community in the hills of north Rocklin, built out through the 1990s and 2000s. Where Stanford Ranch and Whitney Ranch below it are production neighborhoods, Whitney Oaks mixes semi-custom and fully custom homes on larger lots, many of them backing onto the fairways or looking out over the valley. The architecture ranges from traditional two-story homes with stone and brick accents to Mediterranean-influenced plans with tile roofs and covered loggias, and a good number of sprawling single-levels organized around a pool. The scale is a step up from the rest of the city, and so are the kitchens.

Those kitchens were planned for entertaining: a large island facing the great room, a walk-in pantry, a formal dining room, and often a butler’s pantry or a bar between them. In the semi-custom homes the cabinetry still came from a builder’s upgraded option list, with raised-panel doors in a 1990s cherry or maple stain, a soffit-and-crown arrangement above the uppers, and an island assembled from base cabinets. In the fully custom homes it was built for the house but is now twenty to thirty years old and predates deep drawer storage and panel-ready appliances. Either way the room is generous and well lit, and the cabinetry is what dates it.

That is the general pattern for the community; the custom homes especially vary one to the next, and nothing is designed until we have measured the actual room.

Design Review in Whitney Oaks, and the City of Rocklin Permit

Whitney Oaks has a homeowners association with a design review process, and the community’s standards are among the reasons it looks the way it does. Review is concerned with the exterior: what is visible from the street, from neighboring lots, and from the course. Interior cabinetry is normally the owner’s decision and does not go through review. Where a kitchen plan reaches the exterior, most often by widening a slider or adding a window on the fairway side, confirm the current guidelines with the association before the design is final; we raise the question at the first visit so a submittal can run alongside the drawings instead of after them.

The permit is a city matter. Whitney Oaks is inside the City of Rocklin, so building permits come from the city rather than from Placer County. Replacing cabinetry in the same footprint with no plumbing, electrical, or structural change frequently needs no permit; moving a wall, relocating the sink to the island, or adding circuits for new appliances does. We identify which applies during design. Our Rocklin page covers the rest of the city and our workshop there, and the Placer County hub explains which office permits which community.

A Whole-House Approach to Cabinetry

Whitney Oaks houses give the design room to work. The kitchen itself gets full-height cabinetry to the ceiling with the soffit removed or absorbed, an island rebuilt as a single piece of furniture with a finished back and seating planned for the household, a pantry wall of drawers and roll-outs in place of a walk-in closet of shelves, and panel-ready refrigeration and dishwashers that disappear into the run. From there the program usually continues: a butler’s pantry detailed to match, a bar in the great room, built-ins for the office, and vanities in the primary bath.

Species and door style follow the architecture. Traditional and Mediterranean homes take well to stained white oak, walnut, or alder with inset doors in a beaded frame; transitional homes suit painted maple in a slim Shaker or flat-panel door, often with a stained island. Rocklin summers run well over 100°F and many of these kitchens look west or south across the course, so we specify finishes with real UV resistance, build doors and panels to move within their frames, and use veneer-core plywood boxes. Finishing is done in our Rocklin facility, not on site. Our cabinet construction guide explains the joinery, box construction, and finish systems behind that.

Because the shop is minutes away, the detailing can be checked against the house at every stage, which matters where a ceiling beam, an arched opening, or a stone surround has to be met precisely.

Typical Whitney Oaks Program

  • Soffit-and-crown uppers replaced with full-height cabinetry to the ceiling
  • Island rebuilt as furniture, with seating planned for the household
  • Panel-ready refrigeration and dishwashers integrated into the run
  • 1990s cherry or maple raised panels updated to inset or flat-panel doors
  • UV-resistant finishes for west- and south-facing fairway views
  • Butler’s pantry, bar, office, and vanities detailed as one program

How a Whitney Oaks Project Runs

It starts at the house, where we measure the kitchen and the rooms the program will reach, look at how the spaces connect to the loggia and the pool, and talk through how you cook and entertain. Design follows, with drawings and samples reviewed in the room until the plan is settled. The cabinetry is then built and finished in our Rocklin workshop and installed by our own crew, with adjustments handled promptly because the shop is minutes away. We coordinate with your contractor when walls or plumbing move and with the association where exterior review applies.

Built-to-order cabinetry is a multi-month process from first measurement to installation, with installation itself measured in days. Projects start at $25,000; a whole-house Whitney Oaks program sits well above that, and we give a realistic range after the first visit.

Whitney Oaks Kitchen Questions

What Whitney Oaks homeowners ask before a cabinetry project begins.

Does Whitney Oaks design review cover a kitchen remodel?

Not the cabinetry. The association’s design review is concerned with exterior changes visible from the street, neighboring lots, or the course, and interior cabinetry is normally the owner’s decision. If your kitchen plan enlarges a window or changes an exterior door on the view side, confirm the current guidelines with the association and we will plan the submittal alongside the design.

Which office issues the permit for a Whitney Oaks kitchen?

Whitney Oaks is inside the City of Rocklin, so the city issues building permits rather than Placer County. Replacing cabinetry in the same footprint with no plumbing, electrical, or structural change frequently needs no permit; moving a wall, relocating the sink, or adding circuits does. We identify which applies during design.

How is a Whitney Oaks project different from a production-home kitchen?

Scale and scope. Whitney Oaks lots are larger and many of the homes were custom or semi-custom from the start, so the kitchen is usually bigger, the architecture more individual, and the program more likely to continue into a butler’s pantry, a great-room bar, an office, and vanities detailed to match. We design those pieces together so the house reads as one hand.

How do you handle the heat and sun in a hillside Whitney Oaks kitchen?

Rocklin summers run well over 100°F and many Whitney Oaks kitchens face west or south across the course, so we specify finishes with real UV resistance, build doors and panels to move within their frames, and use veneer-core plywood boxes. Finishing happens in our Rocklin facility rather than on site, which is what keeps a painted door from yellowing and a stained one from fading unevenly.

How close is your workshop, and where do projects start?

Our workshop is in Rocklin, minutes from Whitney Oaks, and every cabinet is designed, built, and finished there before our own crew installs it. PineWood Cabinets is a licensed California contractor (CSLB #1095293) operating as a division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates, building custom cabinetry since 2006. Projects start at $25,000.
