Estate kitchen cabinetry concept for a Los Lagos custom home in Granite Bay, California

Cabinetry for the Custom Estates of Los Lagos

Los Lagos homes were commissioned one at a time, by different owners with different builders, and their kitchens reflect it. PineWood Cabinets designs, builds, and installs cabinetry for these estates from its own workshop in Rocklin, a few miles away.

What a Los Lagos Kitchen Starts With

Los Lagos is one of Granite Bay’s gated estate communities, built out largely through the 1990s and 2000s as individually designed custom homes on large lots rather than as a production tract. The architecture changes from lot to lot: Mediterranean and Tuscan-influenced villas, traditional two-story homes with brick or stone accents, and sprawling single-levels organized around a pool and a covered outdoor room. What they share is scale. Kitchens were planned for entertaining, with a large island, a walk-in pantry, a separate dining room, and often a butler’s pantry or bar between the kitchen and the formal rooms.

That scale is both the opportunity and the problem. Cabinetry from the original build is now twenty to thirty years old and predates deep drawer storage, panel-ready appliances, and full-height pantry walls. Many of these kitchens still carry raised-panel doors in a honey or red-toned stain, upper cabinets that stop short of a tall ceiling beneath a crown-and-soffit arrangement, and an island assembled from a row of base cabinets with a slab on top. The footprint is generous and the room is usually well lit. The cabinetry is what dates it.

Individual homes vary, and nothing is designed until we have measured the actual room.

Design Review, the Association, and Who Issues the Permit

Los Lagos is governed by a homeowners association whose design review covers exterior changes. Confirm the current guidelines with the association before planning anything that alters the outside of the house. For a kitchen the practical point is simpler: interior cabinetry is normally the owner’s decision. Design review concerns what is visible from the street or neighboring lots, such as a new window or exterior door; replacing cabinetry or rebuilding an island happens inside the walls. Where a kitchen plan does enlarge a window toward the pool or add a door to the outdoor room, we flag it at the start so the submittal runs alongside design rather than after it.

Building permits are a separate matter. Granite Bay is unincorporated Placer County, so there is no city building department; permits are issued by the Placer County Community Development Resource Agency. Replacing cabinetry in the same footprint with no plumbing, electrical, or structural change frequently needs no permit at all, while moving a wall, relocating the sink, or adding circuits for new appliances does. We sort out which category your project falls into during design. Our Granite Bay page covers the wider community, and the Placer County hub lays out the permit map for the county as a whole.

Our Cabinetry Approach for Estate-Scale Rooms

Large kitchens reward cabinetry that reads as architecture rather than as boxes on a wall. For Los Lagos we usually propose full-height runs that meet the ceiling, with the soffit removed or absorbed into the cabinetry; an island built as furniture, with a finished back, a plinth or furniture legs, and seating planned for the number of people who actually gather there; and a pantry wall of drawers and roll-outs in place of a walk-in closet of shelves nobody can reach.

Species and finish follow the architecture. Mediterranean and traditional homes take well to stained white oak, walnut, or alder, often with inset doors in a beaded frame; transitional homes suit painted maple in a flat-panel or slim Shaker door, sometimes paired with a stained island. Granite Bay summers run well over 100°F, and the west-facing sliders that open to the pool pour afternoon light onto cabinet faces, so we specify finishes with real UV resistance and build doors and panels to move within their frames rather than against them. Boxes are veneer-core plywood, and finishing happens in our Rocklin facility, not on site. Our cabinet construction guide explains the joinery, box construction, and finish systems behind that.

Storage is where these kitchens change most: deep drawer stacks for cookware, an appliance garage, pull-outs sized for a large household, and a bar or butler’s pantry detailed to match. Because a Los Lagos project often continues into the great room and office, we design the kitchen with the rest of the house in view.

What We Typically Change in Los Lagos

  • Soffit-and-crown uppers replaced with full-height cabinetry to the ceiling
  • A base-cabinet island rebuilt as a single piece of furniture with real seating
  • Walk-in pantry shelving converted to drawers and roll-outs you can reach
  • Honey-stained raised panels updated to inset or flat-panel doors in the right species
  • UV-resistant finishes for pool-facing rooms in a valley that tops 100°F
  • Butler’s pantry, bar, and great-room built-ins detailed as one program

How a Los Lagos Project Runs, and Where Pricing Starts

It begins with a visit to the house, where we measure the room, see how the kitchen connects to the pantry, dining room, and outdoor space, and talk through how you cook and entertain. Design follows, with drawings and samples reviewed together until the plan is settled. The cabinetry is then built and finished in our Rocklin workshop and installed by our own crew, and because the shop is a few miles away, any adjustment that surfaces on site is handled promptly. We coordinate with your contractor when walls or plumbing move and with the association where exterior review applies.

Cabinetry built to order is a multi-month process from first measurement to installation, and projects start at $25,000. Los Lagos kitchens, given their size and the programs that extend past the kitchen, usually sit well above that starting point, and we give a realistic range after the first visit rather than before it.

Los Lagos Cabinetry Questions

What Los Lagos homeowners ask before a kitchen project begins.

Does the Los Lagos association have to approve a kitchen remodel?

Normally not for an interior-only project. The association’s design review is concerned with changes visible from outside the home, such as a new window, a changed exterior door, or a roofline. Replacing cabinetry, reorganizing storage, or rebuilding an island happens inside the walls and is the owner’s decision. Confirm the current guidelines with the association if your plan touches the exterior.

Who issues the building permit for a Los Lagos kitchen?

Granite Bay is unincorporated Placer County, so permits come from the Placer County Community Development Resource Agency rather than a city. Replacing cabinetry in the same footprint with no plumbing, electrical, or structural change frequently needs no permit; moving a wall, relocating the sink, or adding circuits does. We tell you which applies during design.

What cabinetry styles suit Los Lagos homes?

It depends on the architecture, which varies house to house because the community was built as individual custom homes. Mediterranean and traditional homes take well to stained white oak, walnut, or alder with inset doors; transitional homes suit painted maple in a flat-panel or slim Shaker door, often paired with a stained island. We bring samples to the house so the choice is made in the room’s own light.

Can you keep the existing kitchen layout and just replace the cabinetry?

Yes. Many Los Lagos kitchens have a generous, well-lit footprint and only the cabinetry dates them, so a same-footprint replacement is common and usually avoids a permit. Where the layout itself is the problem, we redesign it and coordinate with your contractor on walls, plumbing, and electrical.

Where is the cabinetry built, and how far is that from Granite Bay?

Every cabinet is built and finished in PineWood Cabinets’ own workshop in Rocklin, a short drive from Los Lagos. PineWood is a licensed California contractor (CSLB #1095293) operating as a division of Voronenko & Ethen Associates, and we have designed, built, and installed custom cabinetry across Placer County since 2006.
