Few towns in California have protected their character as fiercely as Carmel-by-the-Sea. There are no street numbers, no neon, no parking meters, and few sidewalks in the residential quarter. Instead there are cobbled courtyards, hidden passages, and the famous storybook cottages with their steep gabled roofs, designed by builders like Hugh Comstock in the 1920s. The one-square-mile village climbs gently from the white sand of Carmel Beach up through a forest of Monterey pines and cypress to the homes that overlook Carmel Bay. Since 2006, PineWood Cabinets has built custom kitchens for residents who chose Carmel precisely because it values craft, scale, and the patina of the handmade over anything mass-produced.

The architecture here is unusually varied for so small a place. Within a few blocks you will find the whimsical fairy-tale cottages of the village center, board-and-batten Carmel cottages tucked under the trees, Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial homes near Carmelo and San Antonio, and dramatic contemporary residences along Scenic Road, where the windows frame the surf at Pebble Beach and the cypress at Lone Cypress beyond. A Carmel kitchen also has to contend with the realities of coastal living.
